new PSU
I bought an PSU not long ago because my 420W Levicom failed (couldnt' handle an 6800GT@Ultra:s)
Anyway, since it happened on a LAN (ARG!) I bought what I could get. http://www.com-tra.de/shop/de_DE/pro..._550_Watt.html http://info-mods.com/articles-47-LcPower_550W.html Is what I bought. However, I'm not so familiar with PSU's, and it seems that the Ampere is rather imprtant these days. I found an small rview of an user on a site, and he said that the 12v(24ampere) remaning should be enough for a mid-class system. However, I'm going to buy an 3800+/4400+ dual core with an x850xt or 7900GT, and I want to have room for OC'ing and be sure that it the PSU can handle it is the PSU decent enough for that, or should I buy a new one, and so yes, which one, or how much ampere should it have on the 12v and such? Also, would it fit in an shuttle? because I just get the feelng that thiose shuttle PSU's aren't up for an 7900GT Last edited by Nergal; May 9, 2006 at 01:53 PM. |

I would like to know -what ampere- is needed to sustain an X2 +3800 + 7900GT/X850XT and have some little room for OC'ing
I can see that the one you proposed is 40A on the 12V (cost 100euro) Mine is now 24A, my Levicom was only 15A. Is that 24A enough? If not, what Ampere will suffice? However, I've found certain PSU's that are specially made for SLI, and they "only" have 48A on the 12v, so, ain't 40A for 1 GPU too much? I want that it cost at least as possible. |

well 20+amp for middle spec single card rigs works fine. 24 should be fine except for the high end video cards..

Yea 24A is kinda cutting it close with an X2 and a 7900GT, plus you wanna overclock. Hmm I wonder how reliable that PSU is too, bc you dont want the PSU to fry your computer. Thats why I stick with well known names like OCZ, Antec, P&C Cooling

It matters if you are using fans, lights, more than 1 HDD.
For the last 6 months I have been using a CoolMax 450 for my Very OCd 3700+(2910mhz) and X800GTO with 4 HDDs in Raid0, 7 fans, and UV lights and CDRW. My PS was 18 amps on the 12V rail. You should be fine with 24Amps. But be careful if you use a X1800 or X1900 because they hog a LOT of power. |

Understandable..............to a point........what absolutly amazes me these days Is how peeps can Bankroll a Kickass system.....but when It comes to the 1 thing thats feeding the Whole system.....they want to go "As least as possible".........just doesn't make any sense no matter how you look at It......Spend the Extra cash....get a Quality made PSU thats got a good reputation......Acting like 40amps may be to much Is the sillyest reason I've ever heard for not commiting to a PSU........It's one of the few things that usally make the transitions from system to system......so why not Nail It out of the Gate.....and not have to stress about It again....not to mention having the Extra Power available for when you decide to start pushing your system alittle harder. Me.......I've got easily over $1000 In hardware In my system.....not to mention hundreds of gigs of Data......why the heck would I want to count on smooth balanced power from a 50-70 dollar PSU. Food for thought........PSU's can cause more damage than anything else when they go pop....worse yet Is when mild and moderate undervolting happens In the backround...then you wake up one day to a dead system and very few things want to work again...something to think about. And with every Tom/Dick and Harry making PSU's nowadays..................Piece of mind Is something I'm willing to pay for. My 2c's....not a flame at all.
