How do I Install an OS from an external HD?

Never done this before.
Done it what seems like a million times for xp, from a cd though.
Say I reformat my pc after downloading a digital version of win 7 and save it to my external..
Can I just boot from another device and it will find the installer somehow?

I just don't get how it works yet. XD.
Thanks all, any insight would be appreciated.
Looking to upgrade to 7.

Some mobos allow this. Is your HDD on USB 2.0? If is on FireWire, doesn't work...

You can always burn that image to a DVD like you're supposed to

It has usb 2.0
and yea.
I never did an iso before.
I'm embarassed to say it..lol.
I can do autocad.
But I've never burned an iso.
ok, fine, i admit it! XD

It's time to learn..lol..
Downloading win 7 64 via digital purchase.
Then using this isoburn-a-whosiwhatsits to make a backup disc.
Swear I'll manage to muck this up at least once..lol
