How to crack Vista password

Hi Guys,
I have an old Vista PC where the original user has forgotten the password for the account. Is there anyway to add another user or resetting the password other than via either the OS?

I tried ERD commander but it boots up with a blue screen, and OPHCrack, and NTPassword Fixer, nothing seems to work even though OPHCrack did detect the right partition and registry path.

Thanks for looking!

Cheers,
Frederik

the only "legal" way i can think to do it would be to take the hdd and place it in a computer with an os like win7 and extract the data you need, reformat the hdd, reinstall os and transfer files back. might take a few hours but is guaranteed to work

Or you could try one of these :

http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolso...d-recovery.htm

Last time I tried I took out a HDD and put it in my pc, used a program (don't remember, but google a bit) and it found/removed the password. Definitely possible, with some patience though! Good luck.

Why should it be illegal to remove a password on a PC I own? Tried option 3 on the link you provided assaulter but it still when it is done booting from the CD it goes to blue screen. And it sucks since the recovery partition on the PC only supports a full return to factory default :/

Maybe the only option left then is to take the hdd, put it in another rig, copy all important data, then start fresh like stated above. Easiest way imho.

ophcrack. google it, as I cant access the website here at work to linky. Easiest thing ever. Simply a live linux cd. Boot it up, pick your drive, bam, got the password. Kinda scary actually. Has worked for me every time.

Could you not boot into safe mode, remove password, reboot as normal?

no vista nd 7 dont let you do that. if you enable a password you need to know it to get into safe mode that trick doesnt work anymore. and neither does the windows 2000 overwrite.

That is what I use.

Solaris17's disc works wonders also though, and has a bunch of other useful utilities. So you might as well grap that.

I think the most likely answer to that is that he wants to check to see if there is any good pr0n on the computer before he formats the drive.

well it depends on how you want to take it. i do this to my systems all the time when i rebuild a PC in the house i always install a program to pull the windows serial because i never remember what key i use for which. and i always manage to loose the peice of paper i left myself a note on.
