Dude, seems they have jumped ship! lol. I wonder why though... Seems rather strange. This will surely hurt NV, XFX sells a lot of cards.

Wow, a slap in the face for nVidia. It makes me wonder if it was in their conctract with ATI. It's too bad for the consumer though.

Pure speculation but my thoughts..

We had a paper lauch which was supposed to be a hard launch, a sudden push back of actual availbility. What if nVidia was tight lipped even to their board partners? What if board partner's were hinging their initial bulk purchases on NDA lift, reviews, and public opinion? nVidia knew these things were hogs; perhaps board partners didn't?

Are ALL components spec'd, owned, and sold by nVidia to board partners who simply slap on their labels to then sell and support the finished product? Imagine writing that PO. I sure as hell would want to know what I'm buying if I were XFX. Think it was based on public reaction?

Lifetime warranty is big with XFX but they've offered non-lifetime before in the US market. According to the article, this is ALL markets, NO Fermi at all for any market.

I'm sure XFX as a darling of NV would be first served! So a look at your second theory :

That seems more plausible!

They probably don't like the lifetime projections with a chip as hot and power hungry as Fermi. XFX just bitch slapped Nvidia.

its most likely to protect their reputation.. the reason people will pay 50 dollars more for an xfx isn't just the warranty.. but the perception that xfx puts out quality products.. what if thousands of xfx fermis were dying early..certainly would damage their reputation and if they have no reputation they have nothing

No.. I think it's more due to the warranty. If what you said were the case XFX shouldn't have completely pulled out but revised the PCB and used higher quality components.

its reasonable, the average temperature for the GTX480 is about 95C, about 10C higher is 105c, 105C is the maximum rated for most graphics cards, after that failure is very likely if the card is running at that for long periods and considering graphics cards get dirty and clogged up with dirt sometimes, keeping your card very clean could mean the difference between a working card and dead card.

Quote:
NVIDIA-supplied product specifications state that the GeForce GTX 480 has a maximum GPU thermal threshold of 105°C. This is identical for the previous-generation GeForce GTX 285, as well as the GeForce GTX 470 that shares the same GF100 graphics processor.
still its a surprise, XFX have the best warranty and I always buy them, it sucks.

There's no evidence of fermi being unreliable just hot. Plenty other cards have ran at 90+ degree's. XFX's decision will remain speculation until they provide a reason why. Maybe the reason is it will cost them more than they will make if they try to sell fermi since it is in limited supply ?

IMO. that is exactly why they did it. Their name was on the line.
Edit:
Their name and warranty was on the line.

i believe their name/rep on the line as well as it eating into their double warranty offer. i also wonder/think that fermi isn't going to be making that much profit. So little profit and the good possibility of having to freely replace more dying GPU's with their type of warranty would mean they'd be losing even more money. So why not opt out of GTX 470/80 series and just sell ATI's top cards for the time being and not take a hit. that's my understanding anyways.

Everything is just speculation at this point. Please avoid turning this into an ATI vs. Nvidia thread.

Well good news is they haven't pull out of all NV cards, they are still much in the game for the gf104's and future cards. Sad part is, we might not hear from XFX since they won't screw NV and tell the real reasons behind that. If they do so, that will really upset NV!

I also had that in mind but that would surely be off topic! Mwahaha!

Not trying to side with one company over another. When you have a company like XFX, that name means something. With the failure to launch on time and reported problems of the new line, really puts a company like XFX into a bind. Do you stay true to what your company stands for? Or do you take a chance on a product that "could" be a problem? I feel that they are taking a step back because of the "what if" factor. They will be right back in the game with Nvidia when the time is right for them.

It's kinda weird they've gotten so into ati that they're willing to damage their relationship with nvidia. Wasn't there just a some press release about their 4 GB 5970 where they dissed fermi?
