I guess the easiest way is to just try it and see.

"upgrade" is what is throwing me off.

If you were to take an XP machine and write 7 over it w/o a format, does it not still keep the windows.old file?

seems to me it should work that way at least

problem with that, is i was going to give it to my bro in law, and I, nor him can afford to have this screw up.

I could give it to him, but Im not sure.

I could give him the full version of 7 also i guess and let him upgrade that.

he would be going from vista home premium to windows 7 pro

when I went from Vista to the 7beta it made the folder for me.

even when I went from the beta to full retail, I could have saved it, but I chose a full wipe prior to the install.

Should save game saves, pics, documents, basically everything you would want to keep.

I called windows to clarify.
Upgrade means you'd have to install an os on the hd before using the win 7 upgrade pack or it won't work. Full can be installed on a clean hd or partition as a stand alone.
If your uppgrade goes bad, you not only have to reinstall 7, you also have to reinstall whatever you upgraded from.

So he'd have to reinstall vista, then win 7 anytime the os gets messed up. That's what micropoop told me anyway.
Also upgrading may have issues if he's on a 32 bit os trying to upgrade to a 64 bit os.

There are workarounds all over the internet that show you how to clean install 7 instead of doing the "upgrade."

theres a trick to this.

install the 7 upgrade without inserting your key.

start the upgrade installer from within the OS, and "upgrade" from 7 to 7.

tada, you just 'upgraded' without needing another OS first.

That's indeed basically it. Here's a detailed description if anyone wants it:

Re

MSDN keys are the individual keys that are provided to all MSDN subscribers during MS Office launch and these keys are meant for their personal use only. Retail keys are like the commercial product keys that are available in retail market, for retail customers.
