Will an am3 cpu work in a am2 mobo?

Hey guys, have a friend that has an AM2+mobo (cant remember the make) and he wants to upgrade to a quad , he's got a good deal on a phenomII x4 965 and he had heard that this will work on a AM2 board. Is this true? Any help would be appreciated! Money is an issue so thats why he's not going full out on a new mobo cpu rig. Just something to help BC2 run a little better than his amd 5000.

thanks.

System Specs

only a few am2+ mobos support 140W, some Phenom II 965s are now 125W though, but still, not all am2+ mobos support 125W

So it all depends on the mobo

also, it dpends on whether the mobo manufacturer decided to release a BIOS that supports these CPUs

Asus M4A785-M low bdget motherboard support 125W AM2+. older chipset but support 140W the Asus M3A78-EM...both onboard hdmi, sound, gigagib lan and plenty of usb and sata.
Difference is videocard ..the m4a785-m is a HD radeon 4200 512megs and the M3A78-EM is only 256megs on a radeon hd3200. if he have already a good videocard hes better got with the older one since its 140 watts able.

I don't think he is looking for a new mobo...

If you can tell us what his motherboard is, we can tell you right away if it supports it or not

yeah you are going to have to find out the model and manufacturer of the board to get a solid answer.

I have Phenom X3 720 on Asus M3A (95W) oc na 3.2 GHz and for that I had to give a little more juice for stability 1.35V, on better mobos it works on default core up to 3.4GHz. Bottom line, let him check his mobo max tdp and don't push your luck to much.

I'd check the BIOS and make sure you don't need an update.
