3DMark06 confusing and dunno why???

So here is the problem…let me tell you what I was doing:

I had a Phenom X4 9600 with specs in sig and I am running dual SLI XFX 8800GT both the same card. But one I bought new and the other I bought used. For the sake of this posting I will refer to the new one as new and used one as old to make things a lot easier.

I got the second card a couple weeks ago. Get all the drivers up to date and installed but that’s not really my problem.

I d/l 3DMark06 (3DM06) and set the cards to SLI mode. I began the benchmark and got this:
IDirect3DDevice9:resent Failed

How I arranged the cards was the new was on the top PCI and the old was on the bottom PCI slot w/ ASUS SLI bridge and both with 6-pin connectors.

I turned the SLI off and ran just my new card in benchmark and got:

Yesterday I got my new Phenom II X4 945 and installed it into my computer. I then ran 3DM06 again in ‘SLI’ mode and got:

Problem solved right? NO. The cards were running a little hot so I tried moving the new to the bottom PCI slot and the old to the top PCI slot.

Sweet…much cooler now…well…guess what…I tried to run 3DM06 again in SLI mode and you guessed it…I got:
IDirect3DDevice9:resent Failed

I then turned off the SLI mode and ran just the old card (since its on top) and got this:
IDirect3DDevice9:resent Failed

I then swapped them back…the new card on top again and old card back on the bottom. Went back and set them to SLI and ran benchmark and got this:
IDirect3DDevice9:resent Failed

Lastly I switched off the SLI mode and ran just the top new card on 3DM06 and got this:

What my questions are:

1. Is one of my cards faulty?
2. Why is 3DMark06 running on the new card but not the old?
3. But the kicker is, they both ran in SLI when I swapped the new CPU in…why is that?
4. Help?

Be sure to seat both card correctly and use the SLI bridge.

Disable SLI, reboot, REenable SLI. Retry 3Dmark

My first instinct says the used card is bad.

However, I would wipe the drivers with Driver Sweeper, then re-install the latest drivers fresh.

Also, update DirectX as erocker has suggested.

When I put just the old card in, it turns one, displays...but 3DMark06 doesn't work...does that mean it is crapped out?

Yeah I guess I should invest into a new GPU at least a 200 series. I wonder what my PSU can handle? I know it is a NZXT 600 watt w/ 6 pin & 6 pin + 2 pin???

You should just try to fin another used 88gt for your SLI.

200series are kinda outdated now, the newer GTX4xx are way better but cost alot.

You could go with an HD5770 if you really want to change your other GPU too.

( Had a backup HD5750 and scored 15500 with a Q9550 @ 3.825ghz )

Don't even know if my board does ATI...think it only SLI's.

Its all about how much you can throw

You can sold your working 88GT, retest the "bad" one just to be sure before going into this.

"low" budget : HD5770
Good budget : HD5850
High budget : HD5870
Very high budget : HD5970

The newest GTX4xx series from Nvida are power "angry" and i still thunk that the HD5xxx series is way better. better Bang for buck/power/heat

The HD5770 is right in the spot.

Your PSU can handle an HD5970 ... limit but it can !

Thanks. I will try to see if XFX can RMA my card but chances are I won't get a 8800GT back...to old. So I will be stuck with mismatch.

If you card is stil under warantie, you could sell both (if you have missmatch) and buy an HD5850 that would be a very good card !

But i think you told your not a gamer ? Why did you have a SLI 88gts if your not gaming ?

I wouldn't count it out, I just sent an 7600GS back to eVGA thinking I would get something different...and I got the exact same model card back...

And XFX is a pretty good company, if they can't send you the 8800GT back, bitch about having it in SLi, and they might just send you a card back that is equivalant to two 8800GTs in SLi, or better. Such as an HD5770.
