Which graphics card to get?

Ok guys, I am going to be moving in with my gf and her two kids, we both kinda like gaming, movies even more. I have no idea what to do gfx wise, as these 285 cost me a whole bunch I would like to game on high, but also movie night is gonna be important, so it makes sense to go ATi but which card?? Baring in mind I have had bad experience from ati(x800 AND 3870)

I would recommend the 5770, but since that you had bad experiences with ATi, you might want to wait for the GTX465 which is coming out in a few days time.

1. budget = GBP
2. Screen res, HDTV, = 1920 X 1080
3. what games = ANY

Im looking for a 1 slot card that will outdo X2 285 plus home cinema, Ati is only way to go, But in my opinion these cards are slower

HD 5970 could out destroy 2x 285's but thats using alot of power, not as much as 285's though

also

Id just get a HD 5870 in my opinion because not many games use sli 285's and im pretty sure a overclocked 5870 single gpu will just beast higher fps overall threw all games

If you want something to beat the 285 SLI, you will be looking at GTX480 and 5870's, both of them costs some money

Sorry, GBP. :S But that said, isn't budget how much you are willing to spend rather than what you are paying with it? Or you speak predominantly Gaelic?

£400?! Damn, you have cash to burn! Well, if you want to spend £400 on a graphics card, then take a look at the suggestions above. The GTX285 is still a very powerful card though, no need to upgrade unless you can find a buyer for it. Look through to find the best deal

Other than a GTX480 or a 5970 or 5870 in xfire. You could just get a HDMI - DVI converter and then run sound through the GTX 280's.

Its pretty much impossible to beat GTX285's in crossfire. the 5970 comes quite close, but still loses by a good deal. No, you are better off either keeping your 285's if you want crazy framerates. If you are concerned with the power consumption, you can "downgrade" to the 5970's but I dont think its worth it.

A single 5870 will match the 285's in performance, use less power, run cooler and have an easy to use HDMI out. It's a no brainer for me.

How? The last time I checked, the 5870 is only ~30% more powerful than 285 SLI? Unless SLI scales that badly.

A single card is better for the other reasons I mentioned. I was running my two 5850's against two 280's and got almost double the framerates at times. You can sell the two 285's, get a 5870 and have change in your pocket most likely.

Eh? where you half asleep when you wrote the 2 comments above, in 1 hand you said nothing beats 285 sli and the other you say a single 5870 is 30% more powerful, which is it?

In any case I really cant see why the op is even thinking of a new GPU, as mentioned you could get a DVI>HDMI adapter if you really want to. Though if you are looking for a single card solution, 5850 as you can oc to 5870 speeds and the extra £100 or however much it is isnt that justified. Then add another in a year or so when you need the extra horsepower?
