GeForce GTX 460 Details and Launch Date Emerge

NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 460 (not to be confused with the older speculative name of GTX 465), is expected to be the company's weapon of choice to take on the lower-end of ATI Radeon HD 5800 series, and Radeon HD 5770. Based on the new 40 nm GF104 GPU, the GTX 460 will step up competition in the DirectX 11 compliant performance GPU category.

The specifications so far known show that the GPU will make use of all the components available on the GF104, which include 240 CUDA cores, and will feature 768 MB of GDDR5 memory across a 192-bit wide memory interface. Apart from basic specs, the board's TDP too will be much lesser than that of the GeForce GTX 480, at 180W. It comes with the usual bunch of NVIDIA exclusive features including SLI (we expect 2-way), CUDA, PhysX, and 3D Vision Surround. It expected to launch in mid-July, just in time for summer.

So, Nvidia finally getting some mainstream cards out. Too bad ATI beat them to it by half a year. Based on the specs, I'm not too impressed. I think it will have about the same performance as a 5830 or 5770. And for the TDP being "much lesser", it's still pretty darn bad at 180W. Remember, on paper, the 5870 has a TDP of 188W. So even if it's priced well and performs well, you still may want to go for ATI, since it produces less heat and matches in performance.

180W TDP for a mainstream card!?
this is a joke, right?

Lolz at you guys, currently on 285 and really haven't seen a reason to upgrade, first time in years I'm considering going to the red team, Nvidia really dropped the ball on this series.

the energy consumption is about the same as nvidia's GTX260 216.
still, it's way too high I think, but if the price/performance is right, watts don't matter that much (solar power ftw )

I hope this rumor is not correct because if this card is has near equivalent performance as a GTX285 but yet consumes about the same power, that equals no improvement at all.

How come Nv does not understand the term efficiency?

Fermi is still a new architecture, so problems should be expected.

Most probably fake or simply wrong information IMO. 240 SP? 240 can't be divided by 32 which is the number of SP per SM on Fermi architecture. Complete redesign or simply bad info? My bet is certainly bad info. I think that someone took the GTX480 and divided its specs by 2 and claim it's 460.

EDIT: Nevermind I'm right. This is what the autor of the article says in his forums:

Quote:
GTX 460: 786MB of GDDR5 - yes, I've had that confirmed. 240-stream processors is our calculation based on the relation of SIMD count to memory bit-width compared to other Fermi architecture cards. 480/384bit/1536MB, 448/320/1280, 352/256/1,000, 240/192/786MB. Some partners could double the GDDR5 density to 1536MB, but I think Nvidia really wants to hit a price and performance point. It needs to compete well with HD 5770.
As if the rule of three could be applied everywhere...

768mb, opposing hd5770... right. Ask for Nvidia for sucky 1080p gaming.

half a year ? may was already 7 months later than ati for 5850 competetive card, well still 24% more expensive for little more performance in my country, another story that is.
took them 8 months before the cards was in my country from the ati release.

and well, ati have a whole lineup while nvidia has one chip, that they makes tons of powerhungry sku's off.
They might sport some performance with the 465 that isnt too chabby, but noise, power and such is just an outrage! some users dont care, okey for them, but i dont see the reason when simular performing and priced cards with lower power consumtion exist.
2nd gen fermi might take ati on if they launch quickly enough, ati is on their way with refresh soon...
2900XT ->3870 much of the same arch works is in there, but it got way more efficient.

This may become a good arch, we cannot know for sure, all i know is that current ones are not anything to be exceptionally proud of to own.

Chill? if the price is right? when last you seen a fair price on computer parts, 09-2010 was price gouging at its finest where motherboard, memory and graphics card appreciated in price even three months after launch, which is just plain retarded and desperate.

Price performance ratio is going to suck guaranteed, why, because it's Nivdia! the way it's meant to be paid.

I doubt it’ll match 285 performance cause 465 did so. I was right with my prediction that 465 was going to be closer to a 5830 than a 5850 (FarCry and Heaven aside). Now I assume 460 power will be between 5770 and 5830, this time, being closer to the latter. It’s no secret by now that Nvidia is filling the gaps left by ATi.

Wait what? Why did they make a 460 and a 465 and they are BOTH competing against low end 5800s. The 465 can barely beat my old 285 and it uses more power and it has more SPs, and then this has 240 which means it will be less powerful than my 285, and it still barely uses less power. How does that work? When you reduce the transistor size from 55 to 40 nm you would expect nearly half power consumption for the same performance. How did NVIDIA manage to make Fermi so bad?

But on to this card. FAIL is still to light on it. 180W to compete against the 5770 which uses 108W. Nice. Efficiency Win. Not. And seeing how the 465 goes against the 5850 and 5830, I can't see this being a winner.
