ATI Tool locking system up?

I recently purchased an Asus W3J laptop 1.8 duo core with an x1600 in it.
As soon as I got it I uninstalled the Catalyst drivers and updated them with the latest ATI Omega drivers. I then installed ATI Tools, when I attempt to find the Max Core and Max Mem the screen will either turn black, white or red (possiby other colors) and then seem to lock up there. Is this normal? how long does it normally take to find the maxes? any ideas?
