Is my system good enough for a 8800GTS?

A friend I have been helping with his iMac G4 (well, actually you guys have helped me - thanks!), is giving me a graphics card instead of money, a 8800GTS.

My question is, is my PSU powerful enough (not going to overclock), will my CPU be a bottleneck (going to change it after summer)?

Although, he does have several cards, and I have not yet made up my mind. But I just wanted to know since the card I'm currently using makes everyone laugh at me..

shouldn't be much of a bottleneck and the PSU should be fine. The 8800GTS isn't from a mac is it?
if it is it won't work without a new bios

No, the one he showed me was 2nd hand. He does have several in boxes (new). Would you like me to ask/see if he does have one for a Mac?

It'd be fine.

I ran an 8800GT on a 550W LC Power (which is nothing special) and it gave fine results on an E4300 at stock, on the E4300 @ 3Ghz, on an E8400 at stock and at 4Ghz, and now it's running on my brother's system with a 5000BE (which I plan to oc once I ventilate his case better).

I stand to be corrected but afaik an 8800GTS is more than twice as powerful than your 9500GT.

Btw, you're meaning the G92 8800GTS which is 512 or 1GB vram are you?

If it's the old 8800GTS with 320Mb or 640Mb vram... run a mile, it'd not be worth it and probably won't be giving you any performance increase at all over your previous 9500GT.

^I wouldnt run a mile from the 320MB or 640MB 8800GTS, they are still much faster than the 9500GT and is a formidable upgrade, obviously if you've got money there is much better cards around but for free you ca not complain. The 9500 GT is bearly a video card its like alot slower than DX9.0 video cards from 6 years ago i.e. ATI 1900 series and Nvidia 7900 series would beat it whereas the 8800 GTS 320MB/640MB is upto 60% faster and equivalent to a 9600 GT or 8800 GS. The newer GTS with 512MBs was closer to with the 8800 GT 512 MB or ATI 3870s performance.

No its fine. I just asked because you mentioned a mac in the first post so i thought that maybe it was a pull from a mac. And if it was you couldn't use it on a windows based

btw a 9500GT is about as fast as a 7900GS/GT
a 8800GTS (G80) is around a 3870
a 8800GTS (G92) is around a 4850

I had a 7900GS when the 9500's came out and i compared them at stock the 9500 did alittle better. But after the voltmod and overclock on the 7900GS it was a fairly large gap between the 9500 and 7900. Once i got the 8800GT almost everything was 2x the score. I owned a 8800GTS 320mb and a 3870 512mb 4850 1gb 8800gt 512mb and compared them all.When at stock there was about a 5-10% difference between the slowest and fastest. If you ask me that isn't even noticeable in most things. When overclocked things started to change alittle bit.
stock i found the order to go something like this iirc
slowest to fastest
8800GTS(G80),3870,8800GT,4850
overclocked it went like this
3870,8800GTS,4850,8800GT***
***the 8800GT had very high headroom thanks to an aftermarket cooler and voltmod also the 3870 was voltmodded with a aftermarket cooler also.

It is a 512Mb version, ASUS sticker.
I was thinking, I had an 7600GT 256Mb card earlier in the machine, and one thing that I noticed was when switching to this card (9500GT) the Windows Experience Index dropped from 5,3 to 4,9.

Was the card that came with this system better than the 9500GT??

Dont bother with Windows Experience Index, its so bad that my 4200 (integrated) outscored my 4570 by 1 point all the time.

Your PSU will power it just fine . You shouldn't get any bottle-necking from it and the CPU . It is a really nice card .

Honestly the 9500GT is not much better performance wise than the 7600GT, contrary to the big jump in naming.

The 9500GT is basically a die-shrunk 8600GT, which was only marginally (think 10%) better than the 7600GT.

But Windows Experience Index is extremely inconsistent, and shouldn't be taken seriously.

The experience index is not a indication of performance that can be taken seriously. Its just a rough estimate at best, probably just a database of predefined scores or something. Run 3D Marks or Crysis' built in benchmark to get a accurate idea of performance.

But to answer your question the 9500 GT is faster than the 7600GT, but the 9500 GT was still too slow to be a formidable upgrade for DX 9.1 gaming even back then.

Yeah at launch. No today, not at all. As new drivers and games came out the 8600GT became as fast as the 7900GT. 9500GT and 8600GT are twice an 7600GT.

The G92 8800GTS 512 would be a great upgrade for you. The PSU will handle it as long as you are not running alot of 12v accessories/fans. Keep the CPU O/C'd to reduce any possible bottleneck.
