When did the "flash sucks" trend start?

It seems like everywhere I go now online I'll find something about how flash sucks and should die.

I only noticed this after Steve jobs denounced flash as if were satan. And said it would never be supported on the Iphone.

WTF?

flash has sucked since ever. but since there was no real alternative it has established itself in the market. if used sparingly it can help with the experience on a site, but don't use it for stuff like navigation

Because its horrible, horrible, HORRIBLE coded and optimized and a fossil from the old age of the internet.
The ONLY reason it still stays is because, like W1zzard said, there was no alternative that could replace it. So it stayed and now nobody can get rid of it.
The best alternative so far is Silverlight, which is far more lightweight and has better features implemented from the get-go like streaming etc. But has faults like it doesnt work correctly on linux and mac, and most server admings going "microsoft = evil" etc.

WTF?

I think that about summed up your answer right there . . .

IMHO, though - I don't really have a problem with it unless a whole site is nothing but Flash/Shockwave . . . then it sucks something fierce.

The app wasn't that bad when MacroMedia was still around, they were at least trying to improve it and make it better - since Adobe bought them out, though, all of MacroMedia's app progression/evolution has pretty much come to a complete standstill.

It didn't started , just seeing on youtube and everywhere else , flash always sucked for me , a friend told me that the code is exeptionally easy to learn , like XML and HTML , those codes are so easy but you can't do a lot too.

How flash operates is the problem, those buttons and operations always fail to work , because it executes stuff in the current window , not on a separate address or new window.

I have never experienced fully trouble free or convenient and fast Flash. Maybe its not a problem when you have something like 20M DSL line... But still even with the fastest connections I've used, the first sentence sums it.

I could say that Flash works almost OK only when you browse the content from your own HDD. And even then its not good enough.

The only legitimate gripe is that flash uses a relatively large amount of cpu cycles to perform tasks. I have a 4mbit internet connection - flash loads almost instantly and has never given me a single crash or hiccup on any of my pc's ever. That's quite an impressive feat considering there are few other cases of things which have never failed me on a pc before.

I don't like flash when it is used wrongly and whole websites or navigation bars are used for flash - flash videos, flash games and even flash banner ads are fine imo - as with anything if flash is used wrongly then it becomes a bad user experience, but that isn't flashes' fault - it's the idiot developer who created a 100% flash site.

I feel a lot of people don't like flash because it's the "in-thing" to hate (ever since apple decided it didn't like flash). Yes it uses a relatively high amount of cpu resources but nowadays you have to have a very old system or very crappy cpus to have issues running flash - and if you have one of those using flash block and only enabling the flash you want to run is good enough.

A lot of people out there hate flash because apple told them to, and never bothered to see why apple doesn't like flash - yes it isn't great on osx, but it still works. The reason Apple doesn't like flash on mobile phones because people would play free flash games on their iphone instead of buying a game from apple. That's the primary reason apple opposes it. I have flash running great on my mobile phone - the battery doesn't suddenly die like apple say it would (running flash takes similar power as an application running on the phone - so there's no real loss of battery life). Flash runs fine for me on my phone - i can watch bbc iplayer on my mobile fine and other flash video sources, which is my primary use for flash (not a big mobile phone gamer).

I agree, if flash is overused or combined in to many aspects of a website, then it's a resource black hole.

But like in video they are killing it (good thing), i remember the days when REAL networks and Microsoft were the best alternatives for video and quick time for the MAC..... back in those days buffering and dropped frames were a big problem.....

then over the last few years Flash Video has take over the space, and now people take for granted all this real time video, HD video and just video everywhere, without having to do too much,

man o man that wasn;t the case years ago, but flash video has changed the face of video, it;s the single biggest reason that video is so easy to watch and also produce.....

again just ,my 2c......

I just hope that by Apple not supporting Flash, it will open a door to everyone else (Dell, HP, Samsung, Google, etc.) to release their own products, that do support Flash, successfully. It is an opportunity to knock Apple down several pegs on mobile devices.

I thought Maemo already did. I figured Android would too.

I was talking about tablets, specifically, in the "open a door to everyone else." There's already phones on the market but it was about the time of the iPad when Jobs made the announcment about Flash. By doing so, he isn't gaining customers, only turning them away.

Jobs making that statement was a bad move for Apple because HTML5 won't be standardized for a long time yet. People who take Apple's advice and go for HTML5 instead of Flash will run into far more problems than simply using Flash. As a result, I think most developers will stay with Flash until HTML5 is finalized. Users go where the developers go, as demonstrated by Visual Studio and Windows.
