System Specs

Buffalo Intros HDS-PXU2 Series Portable HDDs with Native AES Encryption

Buffalo released a trio of capacious portable hard drives under the HDS-PXU2 series. Available in 320 GB, 500 GB and 1 TB models, these drives offer automatic, hardware-based 256-bit AES data encryption. The drives measure 90 (W) x 20 (H) x 134 (D) mm, weighing around 300 g. These use a wrap-around USB cable for USB 2.0 connectivity and power, and have internal shock-absorbing features, and silicone padding that maintain grip over the desk surface. With the bundled Eco Manager software, the drive can reduce its power consumption by as much as 30%. The 320 GB, 500 GB, and 1 TB variants are expected to cost $166, $214 and $311, respectively.

I like the wrap-around cable and the bit of ruggedness, but I wonder how the encryption will work in practice. Plug it in and you get a password prompt when trying to access? I've never used anything like it so maybe someone could shed some light on this.
