Are Laptop HDD's standard size/interface?

If all goes well I will soon be having an Asus UL50VT-RBBBK05 on the way and it comes with a 5400rpm 500GB HDD but ... I'd like to replace it with a 7200 rpm because I've seen the difference using a 7200rpm SATA II in my desktop PC

The question is:

are laptop HDD's standard physical size & mounting holes/interface or does it vary model to model or what? I Googled a 7200 and got no hits for the Asus UL50VT-RBBBK05. Any help would be much appreciated, including opinions whether it's worth the cost or not to do this (since Laptop performance may vary from a desktop???). Thanks

they use standard drives, but sometimes with an adapter on the end of the drive. it should come with the laptop if its needed.

there are some variations with height in 2.5" drives, you'll need to find the model that comes with the laptop and search for a replacement drive with the same height.

Hi Mussels,

that makes sense, just check the HDD that comes with it and do some research. I was hoping to have it on hand when the laptop arrived but I can wait. Thanks for the info.
