I can't resist that shiny copper cooler from that video card Still prefer the non-cooper one, looks a lot deadlier

This whole thing leaves me wondering why they would choose to make this a 465 when they could get more money making this a 470. For that matter, the fact that they were charging $260 for it makes me wonder just how cheap could they sell 470s and still be making profit.

I get the feeling they could cut the cost of all their cards in half and still be profiting. Same for ati. Look at the launch prices of the 5xxx series. If they made a profit then I can only imagine they could do the same now, especially with them getting cheaper to make as volume ramped up. I'm betting 5870s at $220 would still make comfortable amounts of money. Both camps are perfectly able to withstand a price war but neither wants to pull that trigger. So they're designing cards that don't really threaten each other, just slot in between each other's price points. It's like price fixing without a verbal/textual agreement about it.

I think in this case, perhaps MSI is purposely making these unlockable, like AMD pretty much does with their processors.

Most 465's are not unlockable, they actually are cheaper to manufacture, using cheaper cores(cheaper from nVidia, but the same cost to nVidia to make), and they actually don't have all the memory chips.

Of course they could stand to drop prices a sizable amount and make a profit, but they also have to recover developement costs, which is why cards are more expensive when they are new and go down in price over time.

Unlocked in five minutes! Very simple to do. With stock GTX 470 clocks its idling around 38-40C and games at 60-64C. Furmark hit 76C with the fan on auto. Its very quiet at all times. GTX 470 with a solid copper HSF for $260. Not bad.

With the copper HSF does it look like the card is bending in the case?

Its heavy if that's what you mean, but only a couple ounces more than the 8800 GTX with the AC Accelero Xtreme that I have.

basically is the card warping? like does the rear ass sag when the case goes upright?

Sorry to be so thick, but it seems to be very sturdy. It doesn't flex at all and neither does the bracket in the case.

I was wondering about that one. The one reviewed here at TPU only had 8 ram chips so I thought maybe all the aluminum clad ones did. This one does look the same on the back as the Golden Edition though (hardware for 10 chips).

No, the normal ones don't unlock. Newegg's picture shows there are 2 ram chips disabled.

The chips on the back of the card pictured on newegg are missing, so no 10 memory chips.

The solder pads are there, which makes it look like the chips are there unless you zoom in as far as possible, and look really close. Look right above the white sticker that has the model number and serial number on it, you'll see the missing chips.

I wish they made a GTX 470 based on this exact design. I'm in the market for a GTX 470. Haven't decided on one yet.

edit: it seems a "lot" of those cards are just a BIOS flash away from GTX 470. Interesting.
