OCCT Unstable

I can't seem to figure it out. I ran 3.9Ghz for months. Now I can't seem to clear 45min without a BSOD. On top of that I have to repair windows from the disk after that too. I mean its a NASTY BSOD.

I tried a clean install of windows and got the same result. My question is could there have been a windows update that now causes my system to have an unstable OC or could something be wearing out?

Hell they even updated OCCT maybe thats it? I'm starting to think an hour in Prime95 might be better.

What do you guys think?

I'd try pulling out 2 sticks of RAM, it might be a RAM stick going bad.

memtest86 but I would only test 2GB at a time with it.

while thats a suitable method to test the ram itself, it wont help if his issue is caused by having all the sticks in at once - the extra stress on the NB, etc etc.

i've had issues like this over time as well, most common cause for me was PSU voltages dropping slightly - had to boost just about every voltage i had by one notch and it went good again.

i had this happen when i had a 680i LT. q6600 @ 3ghz and 4gb of ram(2x2gb). I ended up having, as mussels did. boosting my NB voltage and CPU voltage a notch or 2 and she was good again.

So it could be the PSU or the RAM.

Well I just ran the windows mem test and it came back clean......I think lol. No windows popped up after restart.

Anyway the PSU is only about a year and a half old but the RAM is much older. Ill run memtest86 and post back with results.

Edit: Never-mind. I just read this.....Memtest86 3.5 Release - Less than 4GB only (3/Jan/09)

I'm now afraid to run OCCT at stock. If its unstable at stock I am proper screwed.

How old's your mobo? isn't it possible for the NB to be wearing a little? hence the need for more voltage. What are your NB temps anyway? yea i'm hung on the NB :P

NB volts are at stock. The only volts I up is the CPU which is already at 1.47.

Bump the NB voltage up 2 clicks and see what that does . And another thing stop running OCCT that is going to kill your shit faster than ANY thing ! Run it once to check for stability and be done . If you have this problem ONLY when you run OCCT then just don't run it . It is a stress test it takes your hardware to the MAX and holds it there ! You would not go out to your car and red line it for 3 hours now would you ? this is the same thing ! Red line that baby till it can't take any more ? No just bump the NB voltage up some and see if that helps but I still caution against the OCCT thing .

Now you got me worried about my CPU. Do you think I may have done some kind of permanent damage? I've always kept her cool.

the analogy of revving your car to the max doesnt apply here - its more appropriate to say you're putting it in its highest gear.

you dont drive you car in first all the damn time, so you DO need to crank it up and test it whenever you screw around with the engine - in EVERY gear possible.

Yeah you are right .

You may have damages the CPU . People are hell bent on stressing there hardware to the max thinking that some how this is good to do . It is not . I tell you what set you OC and every thing to NORMAL run your computer for a few days like that then try you OC once again this time take your voltages up some RAM , NB , and CPU . Then test it out but again you are revving that gear up to the MAX so I would say not to run it for longer than 1 hour JMHO .

its a fair opinion, but the mentality is where i differ.

The way you see it, is that your system is fragile, yet important. dont stress it cause you cant go without it, so baby it, nurse it, and look after it.

the way i see it, is my system either works at 100% for as long as i damn well want it to, in the worst imaginable conditions (45C ambients, our summer)... or its faulty hardware/not set up right.

if my system cant handle every god damned abuse software can give it at stock settings (stress testing/OCCT linpack/furmark etc) - then its faulty hardware, and needs to be replaced. why suffer with bad hardware? if it cant handle stress testing, then its not good enough.

(if i repeated myself a few times... its 4am and sobriety is not on my todo list tonight... uhh, this morning)

Yeah I agree with you up to a point . I still think that OCCT linpack and all that is nothing more than a tool much like a wrench , If you tighten the nut up too much it will break .

Running OCCT Linpack or PSU test for hours on high overclock systems may not be so smart but I wouldn't want to use a system that can't easily handle 24 h of normal OCCT or Prime95 stress testing.

what is the difference between stress test and WCG(crunching) keeping the CPU at 100% 24/7?
If running the parts stressed 24/7 really killed hardware as fast as your making it sound then i would have had 14 dead rigs including my i7 rig. I have ran EVERY rig i have had in the last 4 years overclocked and crunching 24/7 100% after testing it for 6hrs linx and 2hrs OCCT and have yet had anything die other then a cheap PSU from a OEM machine.
Keep in mind i always have made sure everything stays cool that is stressed also(CPU,NB,SB,mosfet, chokes)

if its not 100% stable, its not stable at all, period. I'm with ya on that.

Ben,

I would try running one stick at a time in memtest to make sure it's not the RAM, run them at stock. If they are bad, it'll show. once you confirmed is not your memory then you can move on to tweaking your settings. Also remember, components degrade. When that happens they'll require a bit more voltage from time to time.

I just hope my new 1090T is still ok. I've decided to upgrade my mobo and ram. Until then everything will remain stock.
