something as old as a 9600GT does physX fine for all existing games.

no nvidia card allows you to use physX on ATI normally, you have to use specific (modified or beta) drivers, and/or specific hacks to get it working.

yes, but games are designed to work on the lower end cards first, otherwise no one could play them.

9800GT's seem to be about the best mix atm, for speed in PhysX without being wasteful... but they do add a bit to your systems power consumption. the green models without external PCI-E power requirements may be a good bet.

look for low cost low power but High ROP count for best physx now and later in games. so

8800gs 9600gso 9600gt are current the most likely candidates if you can handle the power consumption tho the G80 gpus are in theory stronger in physx due to ROP count and since there old there cheap so.

8800gts 640 / 320mb gpus if u can handle there power requirment would also be a good bet if the idea that ROPs matter but i cant really find any good articles on G80 physx performance as dedicated cards so research it all first

generally tho 9600gt 9800gt gt 240 seem to be the staple today for Physx Cards

I changed my 8800GTS (G80) for a 9800GT (green edition) and i notice no difference in games or benchmarks, take a look a this, http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=128581 you will notice that the difference from a GTX 460 to a GT 240 is 4 to 5 FPS, a GTX 460 just for PhysX is a waste of GPU power, i can't stand having my 9800GT doing nothing (i only own 2 games where the card work as a PPU) so i fold.
