GF104 refresh, GTX475 speculation
just thinking about the GTX460 and running some quick numbers, I think Nvidia would have an easy GTX475 on their hands if the yeilds of GF104 are good enough to enable all the 384 sp's that are present on the die, and of course up the base clock speed a decent bit, which most will agree there is easily room for. my comparison is only drawn using the 1gb GTX460.
---------------clocks-----------Fillrate (GP/s)-----Bandwidth (GB/s)----GFLOPs--- GTX480 -- 700/1401/3696 --------- 33.60 ------------ 177.4 ----------- 1344 --- GTX470 -- 607/1215/3348 --------- 24.28 ------------ 133.9 ----------- 1088 --- GTX460 -- 675/1350/3600 --------- 21.60 ------------ 115.2 ----------- 907 ---- GTX475 -- 800/1600/4000 --------- 25.60 ------------ 128.0 ----------- 1228 --- this projection would slot the '475' between the current 470 and 480, and I don't think it's an unreasonable projection at all, most if not all current GTX460's will do the speeds listed on their stock voltage, it would just be a matter of yeilds and getting all the sp's enabled. theres always the possibility they could put even better memory on them for something in the 4200-4800mhz range for increased bandwidth. they could also up the stock voltage and change the stock cooler for something slightly better, but as weve seen GF104 isn't that hot at all. thoughts? |

All fine and dandy except....
The GTX 460 is aggressively priced, the 470/480 are not. A GTX 475 would need to follow the same price strategy as the 460 which would make it better and cheaper than a 470 and if oc'd faster than a 480. That would remove teh need for the 470 and 480. So NV would have to price it above the 470 which makes it far less appealing. NV's next step is the sub £150/$200 market with 450 etc. I wouldnt expect another high peforming card unless it's a dualie. But i could be wrong. |

it's possible. even tho the GTX 470 has more shaders, the GTX 465 has more shaders than the GTX 460 and the 460 outperforms it. I can see it bc shader efficiency on GF104 seems better. Still could be close i think, as those specs with the full board enabled is imo perfection on the chip. 800mhz, i don't think i've ever seen nvidia with stock clocks that high lol only ATi

yeah a problem would be the pricepoint thats for sure, but I also feel like they might completely can the GTX470 sooner or later, refresh the 480 as a 485 with 512 sp's and maaaaybe higher clocks, but also dont discount the possibility of a dual GF104 GTX495, that should be a sinch.

yea, i def seen nvidia doing a refresh to stay in the game when HD 6XXX launches, there's just no way in hell they have a next gen release ready or close to ready.
I say as u did a GTX 485, GTX 475 based on GF104 but with high clocks, GTX 465 is already dead with the GTX 460 being cheaper and faster. I also think if they do a refresh of the GTX 480 with 512cores that they'll try to get the clock up.

In one aspect a gf104 based 495 would work but in another aspect nvidia would have to do a refresh to allow tri & quad SLI configurations.

I think it wouldnt be too ahrd for the to make a GF104 based GTX495 and enable quad SLi, I think the only thing holding back a 460 tri sli is the obvious lack of a connector and some driver locking too.
