HSF ideas wanted

Soon to be constructed:

Thuban 1090
ASUS Crosshair III
Coolermaster Scout

Looking for ideas for a good air cooler you folks may have tested in the past. This build will be mainly used as a gamer with some overclock from time to time. (Links if possible please)

Veno X is pretty good now that it comes with the AMD brackets. Or anything by Noctua will work too, like the U12P or NH-D14.

Agreed on the 212+, Performance PCs still has it in the $30 range as well.

Thanks guys - I have not used the stock cooler before...how do these compare to it? A club member has bought a Coolermaster V6, but I have no reports of it's performance as of yet.

Any high end Alpenfóhn

Any high end Thermalright

Those are my personal recommendations, other brands don't strike me as quite as high quality.

Although I don't mind xigmatek I wish they at-least made the effort to adjust the fin array slightly so it looked like something other than an OEM tower heatsink.

I have no idea on the V6, but I haven't heard very much praise for the V8.

The Hyper 212+ is great for the price and is nearly on par with cooling solutions that are double the price. Plus, then you have plenty left over to put on a second fan, or 2 fans of your preference.

This appears to be it on the Egg... COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus Intel Core i5 & Intel... ...Price is right if everyone is in agreement. Is the supplied fan ok as is?

Fan on the 212 is loud, at least IMO. I don't know how much you care about noise, if you do, go with Noctua or buy a heatsink and get Scythe Gentle Typhoon fans. If that's too expensive, the the Hyper 212 is a cheaper alternative, but again, loud fans (IMO).

Anandtech did a review on the Hyper 212, shows that it keeps up w/ the top end coolers until you start overclocking closer to 4ghz, then it doesn't perform as well.

Right now I'm running an core i7 860 with a Megahalems and a pair of Scythe GT AP-15 fans.

Somehow I doubt it would be any louder than the fan on the Saaphire 5870 that will reside in it lol. Observations noted tho...

I'm using a CM V6GT on an AMD 965BE @ 3.8GHz 1.38v and am seeing idle temps from 32 - 38 degrees depending on the temp in my apartment, and load temps in the mid to upper 40's. I like the cooler.

EDIT: It's a bit loud though.

Do you have temps from the stock cooler? I saw a review where the V6 just clears the Scout's side panel.

Unfortunately, I don't. I've never used the stock HSF for this build. When I get home tonight I'll run some benches and get some better numbers for you on this cooler.

It's pretty big, there seems to be less than an inch of clearance on the side panel of my Cosmos as well.

Just got got word from a club member that he uses a Hyper 212 on a AMD 550 @ 4GHz and he has doubts that it will suffice for my 6 core. Are any of you currently using one of these on a Thuban?

The stock fan is only loud if you run it at 100%, at 70% it's nearly silent.

Edit- I hear the X6's run cooler than the X4's.
