Change Reported OS

Throw me a bone gents, having a brain dead day.

I have a system that uses the Intel E7221 chipset and inegrated graphics controller.
I loaded XP on the machine and the driver for the IG will not load as it wants to see a server OS (eg. Server 2003). The driver is for 32bit OS.
The chipset driver loads fine, but the IG driver will not.
I can't find a workable XP version of the driver.

How can I fool the installer into thinking the machine is running a server OS?

You could replace the windows version codes on the registry, restart the system, and them all the executables would think they were being executed a different windows version, yet this is not a proper solution.

Perhaps you should try installing the drivers without the installer (if they are inside a setup.exe extract them using an unpacking tool, like Universal Extract, then install them through the device manager).

Extract the driver and load it manually through device manager?

Edit: Great minds think alike Temp02, and seem to post at the exact same time too.

Tried drivers from both Dell and directly from Intel.
I'll try the linked program. Thanks gents.

Is this what you downloaded?
If so you can open it with WinRAR, extract the folder "winall" and point the "update device driver" to it.

Universal Installer worked just dandy. Thanks again.
The drivers are old and don't have any widescreen resolutions, but the monitor handled it "gracefully".

Hey man, I fell your pain, I've got a Dell SC420 with the E7221 chipset.

Had to get Server 2008 R2 64-bit running on it...not fun at all!

I finally gave up on finding video drivers and tried to toss a PCI-E graphics card in it...only to find out that Dell put in some stupid PCI-E x16 slot that has a divider in it to prevent real x16 cards from being inserted, you have to use x8 or lower! So I got an old 7300GS and chopped the PCI-E connector down to work.

Glad you got it sorted!

That's exactly the same system I am working on (SC420).
I had no problems putting Server 2008 R2 x86 on it, but I needed to downgrade it to an XP workstation for some indeterminate duration.

Thanks for the heads up on the PCIe slot. I was pondering slapping in a discreet board.

wait.. as i see it your trying to install a server driver to a non server version of windows XP... why?

you could possibly just file down that bit of plastic in the PCI-E slot so a x16 card would fit..

Why? Because he is using Windows XP, and the only drivers available are for server OSes, as this is a Dell Server system with an Intel Server chipset. And since XP and 2003 use the same driver system using a 2003 driver on XP isn't a problem as long as you can get past the OS check in the installer.

It isn't as simple as just filing down the bit of plastic, the dividers are actually inside the slot.

Here is a post I made about the issue a while ago: http://forums.techpowerup.com/showpo...09&postcount=3

Now there is a guide on the internet that talks about cutting the dividers out. However, I feel it is probably a better idea to just take a cheap sub-$30 PCI-E card and cut the card to fit instead of risking destroying a hard to find, and more expensive motherboard, in a system that needs to be function. When you are looking at $50-100 minimum to replace the board, plus downtime for the system, vs. $30 for a graphics card and no downtime it is a no brainer which to modify.

If you can even find a board. SC420's aren't exactly bleeding edge any more.
