Should I update my BIOS
Hi,
I've never updated the BIOS before and not sure if I even need to. I'm not having any technical problems, just curious if I should get the latest BIOS update or just leave well enough alone. The most recent update is from last year "0507 (7/02/2009) Update CPU MicroCode". Not sure how important microcodes are so don't know if there's any benifit to it or if it would even be worth the risk of updating. The second update is "0407 (2/26/2009) 1. Updated CPU micro code(s): * M03106A5_0000000F - Intel Nehalem-EP D-0 Nehalem-WS 1S D-0 Bloomfield D-0 * M03106A4_0000000F - Intel Nehalem-EP C-0 Bloomfield C-0 2. Support i920 CPU ratio up to 21 and i940 up to 23 in BIOS setup. 3. Increased the boot block version from 24 to 25." ![]() The oldest update is "0208 (10/31/08) First Release" I know some say don't unless you need to, while others say get all the updates you can. Any help or thoughts on the subject would be greatly appreciated. ![]() Stuka |

Lot's of guys would tell you if something ain't broke, don't fix it. However, with computers, being up to date is generally a good idea, especially for bios where OS support, increased performance, correct fan controls, etc are added.

Thanks for the quick reply! If I get the latest update will it be a compilation of all the previous updates as well?

Well considering it has updates for your processor specifically listed I would most definitely update the BIOS.

I just downloaded the new bios on to a pen drive: you're board must also have ASUS's easy update feature in the BIOS, it's a painless procedure, go for it.
I like to be up to date, even if I'm not experiencing issues, because meeting release dates might entail cutting corners that are subsequently fixed via new BIOS releases. |

After reading you comments I went ahead and used the ASUS update utility and got the most current update. Having never done this before, it was a very stressful couple of minutes. I kept thinking I was going to brick my MB. Now that it's over, I must say, that was very painless, the program works very well. Nice and idiot proof, perfect for someone new to this.
Thanks to everyone who helped. You made this process a lot easier.Stuka |
