AMD Readies Two Fusion ''Zacate'' Models for Q1 2011

At least two new Fusion APU models based on the "Zacate" silicon are slated for Q1 2011. The Fusion "Zacate" processors are meant for ultra-portables, nettops, and SFF PCs, with a small TDP of 18W, an even lower-power version codenamed "Ontario" is being worked on, with a TDP of 9W. The first two Zacate chips include Fusion E240 single-core, and Fusion E350 dual-core. These chips are based on the Bobcat architecture, and pack DirectX 11 compliant IGPs with UVD 3.0, a single-channel DDR3 memory controller. The platform release will include the supportive Hudson D1 chipset.

Can't wait to see how these compete with Atom.

I wonder what UVD 3.0 has to offer compared to 2.2.

Why single-channel mem. controller? When chips with DC controllers first arrived, memory performance gains were around 40-45%, at least on the AMD's side. Do they plan to integrate DDR5 controller afterward (or together with DDR3)?

No point fitting a dual channel when you can usually fit only 1 memory stick on a nettop.

Not to mention, I somehow doubt dual channel would actually prove to be much of a performance boost on this kind of platform.

Wait a minute, will even Zacate have single-channel memory controller or just Ontario? I'll understand if you stick single-channel chips along with netbooks, but if Zacate actually goes to SFF PC's and mainstream notebooks, I don't see any reason not to include dual-channel controllers with it.

Intel's Atom is getting "old" so this AMD will wipe away
It will equivalent (or a bit slower) with an AMD Athlon II X2 240

I'm looking for a netbook/nettop early next year, i really want to see how these perform against the atom as im hoping they put up a nice fight so i have a better selection to choose from.

I have a feeling this won't be much faster than atom at all... the IGP should be pretty sweet tho.

atom hasn't changed a whole lot since it first came in (architecturally) I dare say Intel has something up its sleeve to combat this new AMD chip.

I mean they're still manufactured on 45nm and Intel is well in 32nm, that's already a start and right now they consume sweet f/a power, and the clocks are low.

would be nice to see AMD wipe the floor with Intel in at least one segment.. but I just don't see it happening.... time will tell.

If you want the dual channel controller, hold out for the 32nm Llano processor. But as mentioned, I don't think it will make a huge difference for the targeted demographic.

And no, there are no plans for a DDR5 memory controller (hell, DDR4 is only now being specced out).

I have to admit im feeling kinda the same, im not expecting amd to thrash intel with these but a better selection is what i am after so i can choose something that suits my needs beter and a slightly more powerful gpu would be nice.

I am hoping/assuming that intel will be bringing out something new for netbooks around the time of sandy bridge so that is what i would hope/assume the bobcat is up against thus why i am not expecing an amd thrashing but whatever happens i am glad to know i will have a better selection to choose from and for the most part the gpu will be the importaint part so i am kind of hoping amd will give me every reason to go with them.

I dont think there will be anything within the netbook market they have that covered really well. zacate can be used in desktops also, add a 5xxx or 6xxx GPOU to it and you have a good dual core system capable of playing games

That's just graphics performance. I'm not interested in that, I want to know how it competes on the cpu level.

yeah i know shame anand don't use cpu intensive benchmark, but its surely a lot faster than atom, and maybe the performance will be identical or better than Phenom II, because zacate use phenom II core that being modified slightly

I hope it is faster than a 240 seeing as the two have absolutely nothing in common except they are coming from AMD.

How about this:
Quote:
So the BOINC results of Ontario (Bobcat core) indicate a rather high DP throughput for a mobile CPU core...........Comparing the Bobcat core to an Atom core at 1.66 GHz (as this one), the benchmarked Bobcat cores are about 2x the integer performance and 3x the FP performance of Atom.

Thanks. Exactly the kind of stuff I was after, but it's not giving many details about the competing Atom setup. I'd like to see more than just Boinc tested.
