L4D2 + GTX285 + mystery = noisy fan!
So, I haven't played Left 4 Dead 2 for ages and wanted to play the new maps. On my 26" 1920x1200 monitor it looked fantastic, as you'd expect.
But WTF the noise?! The fan on my GTX 285 ramped up to full within a 20 seconds and stayed there. Back to desktop and quiet again. Played UT2004 and still quiet. Tried my 8800 GTX and only moderate fan noise, as expected. Noticed a fair amount of dust in the 285s fan. Blew it out with my breath and the dust in the fins inside came out, but didn't seem all that excessive. Popped it back in and quiet again! ![]() Awesome game. Had forgotten a little bit how compelling Valve games are.

The Sacrifice and No Mercy.
L4D2 store page. EDIT: I should add that I'm talking about single player mode, here.

They added the monsters from the second part to No Mercy and changed certain features of the map, such as the location of horde outbursts and architechtural elements: you can no longer completely trust your past knowledge of the level.
There's a completely new level and other stuff, but I assume that after reading the first sentence you are installing/starting up the game. |

Incidentally, qubit, I would change the thread title to:
Dust, seemingly not that excessive + GTX285 + resolved mystery = noisy fan |
