Upgrading E6700?

Lo guys, ive had my Core 2 Duo for nearly 2 years now and I want a Quad core but I don't really know what one to buy there are some many choices with Q series. Basically I want the most up to date and fastest I can afford quad core on the market. Ive got about £200 to spend, I would like a new MB and one of those I7's but money won't allow it for quite some time at the moment, any help welcome TY AAA.

System spec below..

Windows XP pro.
Core 2 Duo 6700 Oced to 3.1 ghz
Zotac 9800 GT (latest Drivers)
Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3LR
Western Digital Black 600 gig HD
PSU 550 Watt.
Kingston Hyper-X 4GB KIT PC2-8500

Anything in the q9*** would do nicely. Quite some time you say... I would hold off till then if I were you. I myself am trying to find an excuse to upgrade everyday, till the point of lying to myself. But sadly, I don't really "need" more powa. An e6750 is plenty for my needs atm. But need and want are two different words altogether lol.

Great but a tad overpriced (at the time, don't know the prices now though) But I'd get one for sure. Great chips, unlocked multi. Pure bliss!

Thanx, its been ages since I really read up about the Intel chips and basically this ill be the last CPU ill put in this MB and just want to get the most out of it before I need to rebuilt a PC from scratch. My main reason from wanting a quad is so that I can ArmA II and OA because at the moment I can barely play it with the 6700.

Hm maybe arma II also wants a good gpu to go with it. Why don't you go that route first? I also have a 9800gt, it aint the powerhouse it was in its days!

To be a little more specific, I would look for a Q9X50 cpu and not a Q9XXX.

1.) You can buy a cheap £50 AM2+ motherboard, and sink the remaining £160 on Phenom II X6 and keep your existing memory.

2.) If you go AM3 route, you'll can get a £70 AM3 motherboard and put the remainder of the money on a Athlon II X4 and DDR3. Option 1 will yeild better performance.

You could keep your existing motherboard, but the Q9xxx series costs about £130+ - £160 new, maybe around £120 used. Its a lot of money to sink into old technology, but the choice is yours.

Extreme chips... bleh. All you're doing there is paying a huge price premium for an unlocked multi. I see you're only at 3.1GHz right now, why not try for higher? 3.5GHz? Play with what you have now and see just how much more performance you can squeeze out of it.
