Third PCIe Slot x8 If i run just 1 Card?

i want to get the Arctic Xtreme Plus GPU Cooler. The problem is the sheer size. The only way i can fit the card with the cooler onto my Rampage II Extreme is if i have my 9600GT in Slot 1, Sound card in Slot 2 and the 480 in the third slot (after moving my PSU).

My question is this, will the PCIe slot be an x8 slot then and what are the consequences if this is the case?

Will it run as x8? Yes.

What are the consequences? About 1-2% performance loss.

Why not just drop the 9600GT?

Since it is cooler, I would be OCing....would that negate the loss in performance?

2 reasons...

1... it can help with PhysX which i do not use it much for... however

2.... It folds. Just udner 3000ppd, but it folds.

So unless i can get the 480 to give me 16000 ppd (would that be possible with OC and Cooling?), its not worth killing the 9600.

With the GTX480 there will be no difference in PhysX if you remove the 9600GT. I ran a 9600GT with my GTX470, and got the exact same performance with or without the 9600GT. The GTX480/470 are powerful enough to run PhysX by themselves.

As for folding, I don't see why you couldn't get around 16000PPD with the GTX480. My GTX470 overclocked gets about 15000PPD.

I'd just run the GTS480 @ x8, I doubt you'd notice the performance hit in games, and it would do nothing to FAH performance
