AMD Radeon HD6970 pictured

Yesterday, a forum member of a Chinese site posted 3 pictures on that site and he claimed the card in these pictures is the upcoming Radeon HD6970. According to him, the card has 2GB memory and the GPU is working at 860MHz. No further information on this card due to the NDA concern.

So the 6970 is a single cored gpu?

No thanks, I think I'll keep my 5970 if thats the case.

At least it has two X-Fire bridges

Yes, HD6970(aka Cayman XT) is a single core card. HD6990(aka antilles) has two GPUs.

AMD's naming scheme for HD6000 series confuses a lot of people.

Yup and clocked a tad higher. Im testing my 5970 @ 1000-1310mhZ atm...

So if this is true, then I guess we wont see an X2 gpu in this series hey?

God I hope it's not true

The 6970 is meant to overthrow the GTX480 on the single core market, which is a damned good achievement IF the power consumption and heat regulation turns out to be better also. The design is looking sexy so far!

I'm also hoping the 6990 will be at least 25% faster in DX10 and 50% in DX11 than the 5970.

@fullinfusion: NO, HD6990 is the replacement for HD5970. It was reported to carry two cayman gpus on one board.

If this really is a 2gb card it should be a great performer on an eyefinity setup.

Looking forward to seeing some benchmarks as I may finally have found a worthwhile upgrade for my current cards.

Update: the original poster said HD6970's memory frequency is 1375MHz(effective 5500MHz).

The 2 gbs of memory would be nice, however I do recall 2 gb 5870s before launch that ended up not showing up for many months after the 5870 launch. This might not be the standard model.

I have a good feeling the GTX 580 and 6970 will be very close to each other.
GTX 580 will run cooler than GTX 480, 6970 will run hotter than the 5870, but both will perform within 10% of each other.

That's my guesstimate.

Since 6970 is 580's opponent, I do believe it's ok to see 2Gb on board. They want to surpass greenies in every aspect.

I don't understand why they don't just return to the x2 naming scheme for dual GPU cars, x2 = 2 cards, simple as it gets, and first name is what the 2 cards are.

Either way, 2gb is nice to see, finally something over 1gb on an AMD card that could possibly be under $500.

2gb 5870's were rumored before launch, everyone was hoping for it, next gen and all, but it didn't happen. But if ever there was a time, it is now, been using 1gb cards for what 4 generations now?

There are 2GB 5870's, http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/A..._5870_Matrix/y. And 1GB is more than what a GPU can process reasonably at current resolutions.

Because they're already trying to get it simple in the name They started with 2900 Dual, then 3870X2, 4870X2, then went back to using the x900 for their high-ends and making the dual-cards the highest numbered in that series.

Did you say the same thing when the GTX 295 came out instead of a card with an "X2"?
