CF my hd5870 on water with 5870 on air

hey guys , this is one thing ive always wanted to try was cf! Right now I have my ref sapphire hd5870 on water at 1010/1320. If I were to buy another sapphire hd5870 and left it on air and then brought my clocks down on my h2o card to whatever the air card can clock too, would I be alright with this until I decided to purchase another block? I know this is kinda of a backwards way of doing things, but for now it will have to do,

No reason it wont work

You could get lucky and your new 5870 might match your existing clocks.

IMO i would personally wait until 69xx series release and then sell your current 5870 for a 6970 or 6950

Well from what i gather, crossfire doesnt scale well anyways so you would kinda be wasting a card when you can get a single card/newer card that would do alot better with lower power consumption

Peronally, I'd prefer a single card solution over CF, seems the high end 6*** are coming soon, so that might be the better option. Didn't you have some probs with CF a while back? I don't quite seem to remember, it was 2 5850's I think? Hell yeah, nice to see you around again

Different brands are OK, its different clocks that are the issue, since the highest one will donwclock to the lowest clocks (I dunno if that makes sense, but you got the idea)

And yeah, a lot of stuff has come and gone the last few months! If you can get a 5870 used at a bargain price, it would be ok I guess, since you want to try, but with Ati's latest cards, CF has improved vastly.

ok if I go about this totaly different ,and decide to go with a single top end card, how long till the 6970 come out? any ideas as to a price? Also I was looking at the gtx580 cards, (nvidia I know) Iam thinking ahead as to what will be good for a few years. is my current cpu good enough for a 6970 or gtx580? (q9650 @4.1 on water) or will it be a bad bottleneck?

Yeah don't worry. These cards nowadays are overkill. Your cpu will hold up, they are still good chips, and since its clocked at 4 ghz...
