Yep, it can be done. Just make sure you pull the little battery out if you are doing it to a motherboard.

I know it would work with soap... I just worry about leaving residue in all the little crevices. Not sure I'd be brave enough for the brushing though. There's threads about people knocking caps off cards and such all the time.

Hey why not put the p.c in there all so with the flat screen monitor,

i use little soap, hot water nice to erase dust but soap help much to remove oil, just little bit

this works fine, just make sure you let things dry properly. personally i'm not sure about using soap but cant give a specific explanation not to.

Optical drives? Wouldn't that be very susceptible to water spots? I mean I remember what a pain it was trying to get dreamcast discs to work sometimes, little piece of dust on the reader would screw everything up.

Personally, I think it is a bad idea to use the dishwasher.

1./ You cannot control temperature, it will get too hot on the dry cycle
2./ MOST dishwashers have a "salt reservoir" even if you DONT put in soap
3./ Any leftovers of dishwasher soap is VERY chemically abrasive

Far easier to do the following,

1./ Warm water in the sink or bath
2./ Mild detergent. (Soap is OK, salt is not)
3./ Old toothbrush
4./ Gently clean
5./ Leave to drip dry for a long time, then place in a warm place for a long time (not hot)

Make sure it is 100% inside not just outside

IMHO there is nothing wrong with washing your component in dishwasher, but when you dry it, some minerals from the water might crystallise on your gadgit, causing it to short. I think its best to give it a wash down with distilled water after you splash it about in the dishwasher and dry it properly.

i took it apart first (no electronic parts washed) now that would be daft as just the smallest amount of water is likely to make the solder on components go crusty

I've done it to a power supply. Not in a dishwasher, I just gave it a proper wash before I started soldering. Just gotta let it dry properly, of course.
