Big price difference between two cards that look the same.

Hi all,

Can anyone explain the difference between these 2 othere than the price and the part number?
(prices from Dabs in the UK)

Sapphire Technology ATI Radeon 5870 HD 1GB PCI-Express HDMI (VaporX)
Mfr#: 11161-05-40R £368.73

Sapphire Technology ATI Radeon 5870 HD 1GB PCI-Express HDMI Vapor-X
Mfr#: 11161-03-40R £289.99

I'm tempted to go cheap of course but I must be missing out on something good with £70 of price difference.

Thanks.
C

*Might* be that the one that is more expensive comes with the better Hynix chips instead of the Samsung ones? Or one of them comes with a game?

The pricce difference is in hte components used. AFAIK, the cheaper version does not support voltage control(although this should really not be an issue).

Thanks, for the info.
Still not sure of the difference but I did find this excel sheet of Sapphires products:
http://www.sapphiretech.com/archive/...ga-1_4_033.xls

No mention of the 05 though.
In fact did a 'site:www.sapphiretech.com 11161-05' Google search and it returned nothing, weird.

Looking arround the only differnce I see is this.
11161-03-50R is at Core: 875MHz, Memory: 1024MB 5000MHz GDDR5
11161-05-40R is at Core: 850MHz, Memory: 1024MB 4800MHz GDDR5

The more expensive one seems to have a slower clock and memory, is that an advantage?

If you are planing to overclock, go with a model that you can be sure will allow voltage tweaking, if not go with the cheapest model you can find. NdMk2010 gave you the best option imo.

Thanks, I won't be overclocking, but fan noise is a very important factor in my selection.
The vapor reviews as very quiet, that's why I'm interested in it.

you really want a reference design with 58x0 cards, the non reference ones tend to have a lot of problems.

Most problems with 58x0 cards can be fixed with a quick BIOS update (if you get a problematic card), but non reference ones are often quite hard to find BIOS updates for - let alone replacing the cooler.

If you want a silent one, do what i did. get a reference card, attach an accelero S1 rev 2 with an 80 or 120mm fan (i went 140mm for the hell of it) and enjoy a silent, cool running card.
