Sandy Bridge IMCs Support 8 GB DIMMs

Intel's next-generation 2011 Core Processor Family "Sandy Bridge" isn't very far from launch. Among several interesting architectural features surfacing about the new generation of processors, fresh reports suggest that the dual-channel DDR3 memory controller supports twice the amount of memory as the previous generation. A user has been able to populate each of the four DDR3 DIMM slots on a MSI P67A-GD65 motherboard with high-density 8 GB modules to achieve 32 GB of total memory. The memory controller is able to detect the memory amount and run it properly on a Windows 64-bit variant that supports over 16 GB of memory (Professional/Server series/Ultimate). If the trend keeps up, future LGA2011 processors with their massive quad-channel DDR3 memory controllers will give consumers access to 64 GB of memory, capacities that are the luxury of only high-end servers.

Is there 8GB unbuffered DDR3 available? Or was buffered memory used?

I agree it does look like the board is very lacking on random little chips and components compared to most i have seen so looks almost naked.

So far i have only seen 4GB modules starting to becomes available at the stores i use in recent months but i would assume as more motherboards support them the kits will come, I'm unsure about current motherboards but I'm sure my manual lists 4GB modules as the limit... although maybe i just need more coffee

You mean registered DIMM. Yes, 8 GB RDIMMs may have been used.

Thought socket 2011 was going to have a quad channel memory controller. A 256 bit bus.

Edit: I posted this right after having read this in the post without finishing. later in the post you mention the quad channel controller, so it sounds like a little mistake.

64G ram, hmm maybe it's useful as work stations pc for 3d max and programs like that, i don't even think 3d max or maya use this much of ram

The board shown is a dual channel LGA1155 and LGA2011 is quad channel but i think this is saying that both support 8GB DDR3 modules.
