Given one generally doesn't run hard drives in a way that it would need to be shockproof, I don't see the need for a consumer grade shockproof drive.

Car? Lots of head units support USB drives for music these days.

But will they support the audio codes, what's the advantage of this over a Zune, or an iPod, moreover, how would it be any cheaper ?

Most support at least aac and mp3, with some also offering wma or ogg.

And these should be cheaper per GB than a Zune or iPod, and hold a lot more music. Not saying you need 750GB, just naming a potential use for it.

Not always. Depends on what file types you have in your library, vs what your head unit plays.
