GTX 460 768mb Q&A

Hi guys, I have a couple of questions regarding the GTX 460 768mb.

It uses dual 6 pin, when it's tdp is 150w. That should only require one 6 pin. Can it run on one 6-pin connector? The GTS 250 has a higher tdp and only uses one 6-pin, so what's up with that? Also would the following system be fine with a GTS 450 768mb installed on this psu. Power consumption: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/A...768_MB/29.html

System:
E7400 @ Stock
4GB DDR2 800mhz
Asus P5QL-SE
500GB WD Cav Black
4x120mm non l.e.d
1x140 non l.e.d
^This system power on: http://ijk.com.au/branch/ijk/product...ucts_id=115841

It SHOULD run fine as currently it houses a GTS 250 which uses more power. It's used as a rig that my friends and family play on if they come over, and it's also used for just web browsing etc. I have a bit of extra cash so why not buy it, also extra perf. Thanks a bunch.

IMHO it should run fine. This is how the system consumption is:
CPU=65w tdp + cpu fan = 70w total
HDD= 7-13w
Fans is around 6w each. Total= 30w
GTX 460= 150w

Roughly 260-270w give or take will be used in total. The psu is rated for 550w peak and 450w continuous. It should run fine, what do you guys think? Also the psu is 6 months old, not much ageing.

I wouldn't risk it.

If it's not going to be used really much, the GTS250 will do just fine! Why would you waste the cash?

My post isn't exactly helpful... but i just want you to rethink..

But if you have a look the GTS 250 uses the same if not more power than both the GTX 460 768mb and 1gb versions. I don't see what the problem would be. The total power consumption would be around 260-270w while the psu is rated for 550w peak and 450w continuous, that's a bit of headroom. I've ran a 9800gtx+ on an Asus 450w psu, the max consumption of the system was rougly 270w. It ran fine, and still is. If you have a look I'll be saving some watts going to a GTX 460. The tdp on a GTS 250 is 170w. The GTX 460 768mb is 150w and the 1gb version is 160w. O.o

I'll go against what everyone else is saying and say go for it! Your PSU will most likely be fine and you'll have a nice performance gain, including DX11 capability.

Yes, this backs its up. The 1GB will run flawlessly aswell. The rig has a GTS 250, which uses MORE than the GTX 460 1GB. So I see no problems.

Yeah man, do it. Worst-case scenario you wait a while until you get a new PSU. Not too bad.
