Mom wants a Wii

So my mom wants a Wii for christmas. Her main reason for wanting it is for downloading and watching movies so she doesn't have to go to red box anymore. I'm also gonna try to get her to play some games on it(she likes games like bejeweled). So tell me, exactly what equipment do I need to get her?

Just the Wii (includes RCA cable, power, sensor bar, one remote, and one nunchuck. If you have an HD TV, you should really get a component video cable. If you want more remotes and nunchucks, you'll have to buy those. Of course games. And if you intend to do anything except NES games on virtual console, a classic controller for each player.

The system kit itself comes with everything you need. I think they even come with the Motion+ attachments now.

Is she going to be instant streaming through Netflix on there? I heard it was kind of slow through the Wii. Also, streaming from a computer to it isn't really possible.

I think the most the Wii can handle, for anything, is 480p (854x480). I wouldn't call that "HD" but HD is a marketing gimmic in the first place so, meh.

I completely agree that if strictly movies are the goal, Wii isn't the best option. It is a gaming platform above everything else.

Imo along with the wii you will need a netflix sub. Why don't you build her a lower end htpc? Wii can handle up to 720p just fine.

Here's a source on the 480p limit:
http://www.1up.com/do/feature?cId=3154939

Personally, I've never seen my TV detect the Wii go higher than 720x480i on component video cable. That is basically the same as widescreen Digital TV (DTV).

ok, so if a Wii isn't the best choice, what exactly would you suggest I get her? Please give me some links.

Also, what kind of bandwith is she gonna need for streaming movies. I believe she's on a 3000/768 DSL connection.

@JRRacinFan- Yes, she plans on getting the netflix subscription. As for the HTPC, that would be considerably more expensive than a Wii. I can get a used Wii for $100-125.

BTW, I'm making my purchase in the next day or two

You need to set it to 480p mode in the Screeen options. It's listed as "Enhanced Definition TV" (enhanced my ass...).

yeah the wii does 480i, 576i, and 480p.

im sad at no 576p.

composite does the two i's, component does the 480p.

edit: i dislike the WD ones because often they dont support MKV, or at least the models that do cost a ton more than other brands. that link doesnt work anyway.

MKV is the filetype all modern HD movie files are in.

think .avi, except over 9000 times better.

if it doesnt support MKV as a container and H264 as a codec dont touch it, because that means many modern movie files wont play on it.

I checked on my Wii (US, component video cable) and it is under: Settings -> Screen -> TV Resolution with the options:
EDTV or HDTV (480p)
Standard TV (480i)

It already had the 480p option selected. I never noticed that my TV gives reslutions without the "i" if they are persistent and with the "i" if they are interlaced. For example:
480p = "720x480 @60 Hz"
480i = "720x480i @60 Hz"

480p has always been selected on my setup, I just never was certain (don't remember selecting "EDTV or HDTV"). Maybe the Wii automatically selects "EDTV or HDTV" if a component video cable is used and it uses "Standard TV" when composite video cable is used.

In any event, as Mussels said, there are only three resolutions available:
480i
576i
480p

And two ratios:
4:3 (576i really is 5:4)
16:9 (480i/p really is 3:2)

That gives the following (Bandwidth in bytes/second):
ModeFPS4:3 Resolution16:9 Resolution4:3 Pixels16:9 Pixels4:3 Bandwidth16:9 Bandwidth

Yeah, the Wii sucks when it comes to resolutions. But not as much as the original Xbox. If you have a US version, with a component cable you can go all the way up to 1080i. If you have a European version, you're stuck at 567i. No progressive modes AT ALL. What the HELL were they thinking?

why not a media player? I have a Patriot Box Office. I chose it over Asus and Western Digital for a couple reasons. it can stream media, you can open the unit to mount a 2.5" HD or SSD, connect a portable hard drive via USB or connect it directly to your PC via USB. it supports a lot of file extensions and has firmware support.

If you want to get her a console for movies, you really shouldnt consider the Wii. The PS3 or XBOX 360 is the way to go. Both have far superior online movie rental services and media playback. TBH, the edge goes to the PS3. But if you mum was thinking about playing a few games. She may enjoy Kinect....controller free gaming is good for the old'uns lol

Blu-ray

I just got a Blu-Ray at Best buy that has built in wireless and netflix. It was $90 and the streamed movies are Great quality. I was really impressed. I expected a lot worse then I got.
Just another option if movies is all she is interested in.
