where to buy cable modems

I always thought that those came with the cable service that you are paying for, but i just heard that you can buy these. where would i buy some good ones from?

dang too bad newegg doesn't sell those anymore

any other goods ones, looking for around $40. really wish they had that Motorola surfbroad, i saw it with some coupon code for $38

edit: seems like the old version of the motorola surfboard is deactivated, but theres a new version, guess ill pick that one up then.
