I've spent about 100 hours in Civ V so far, and while I like the game, I definitely would recommend considering some things before buying.

The main issue I have is the players you get online in the multiplayer lobbies - very few if any players any are willing to commit more than 30 minutes to a game and quit soon after the game begins. If you seriously want to play against someone other than the AI, I would seriously suggest finding some good friends or a LAN party rather than relying on the multiplayer lobby. This is complicated even more by the frequent game freezes when another human disconnects, almost requiring you to reload the map every time someone disconnects. In addition, no one except the original player can take over once someone disconnects, so you have to play against AI most of the time.

The other issue I have is that the AI is very predictable. As long as you have enough units and do not build a city next to their border, the AI will never attack. Expecially considering that the AI only try for domination victories, as long as your military is large enough, you can easily win through a science victory without attacking anyone.

I definitely would recommend the game if you play single player against AI and enjoy domination/combat victories, but I would not recommend buying it if you want to play multiplayer and do not have any good friends who play the game too.

What difficulty are you playing on? I _always_ get attacked. Of course, I initiate quite a bit too. Science victory is the long-way around. Military victories are rather simple and much less time consuming.

Yeah, that's what I was gonna ask too. I also have about 150 hours logged now, but my first game I got beat by a diplomatic victory with a UN vote. The game I just finished with a science victory had three failed UN votes from other players, and two of them were also building space ship parts at the same time as me. And one of them was constantly attacking me the whole second half of the game. Playing on anything higher than Prince starts giving the AI advantages and freebies over what is normally available in the game, so it's definitely harder.

As for multiplayer, I totally agree. I've never tried to hop in a public lobby to play with strangers, but I can imagine it would be very tough, especially if you are playing co-op. I've played several multiplayer games on LAN and over the internet with people I know and it is definitely do-able, but you have to play on smaller maps so you can actually finish the game in one sitting. The game does also seem extra buggy while in multiplayer too, which is a real shame. Usually the user interface gets stuck on choose production or unit needs orders, but I've also seen cities not change for several turns as I move citizens around, and units get stuck on the same tile as another.

just before the vote, bribe the member states so they are allied to you.
1 state = 1 vote
iirc you need 12 votes, by then you should have at least 4, so if you have more than 8000, in the bank, then bribe each city state with 1000, so they are allied to you, and you win a diplo victory

also any time i am in a war with another power, when i capture a previously captured city state, i always give the city back to the original owners (i cant remember the exact wording).
they will remain allied to you for the whole game,

that large adress aware tip looks good, i will check it out later (its 1.56am here in the UK)
