Industry’s ''Best CPU'' Speeds Up, Stays Cool, Outperforms Competition: AMD

AMD today announced the immediate availability of five new members of the AMD Opteron 6100 Series processor family that specifically address rising demand for low-power, balanced systems for SMBs and increased performance-per-dollar-per-watt for enterprise and public sector environments. Key partners including Acer, Dell and HP are launching new or refreshed AMD Opteron 6000 Series platform-based systems this quarter, powered by these new 12- and 8-core AMD Opteron processors.

“These new server CPUs deliver greater performance than we’ve ever had before,” said Patrick Patla, vice president and general manager, Server Business, AMD. “When we launched the AMD Opteron 6000 Series platforms last year, we eliminated the ‘4P tax’ and met market demands for higher performance-per-dollar-per-watt. Our customers’ benchmarks and testimonials bear out these improvements, and these five new parts—and the rave reviews—prove that we continue to deliver on our vision.”

  • The two new AMD Opteron HE processors meet market demand for highly scalable, power-efficient systems that are especially well suited for Web serving, virtualization and cloud computing workloads.
  • The new AMD Opteron SE processor enables increased performance in key environments such as HPC, financial services, database and newly virtualized datacenters.
  • These processors are socket-compatible with the AMD Opteron 6000 Series platform, as will be AMD’s upcoming 16-core “Bulldozer”-based Opteron processors.
  • AMD Opteron 6000 Series platform-based systems powered by the new AMD Opteron processors are available now from OEMs and system builders, including Acer, Appro, Cray Inc., Colfax, Dawning, Dell, HP, Microway, NCS Technologies, Inc., Nor-Tech, Penguin, SGI, Silicon Mechanics and ZT Systems.
  • Servers using the AMD Opteron 6000 Series platforms are delivering excellent performance, value, and energy efficiency, outperforming Intel Xeon processor-based servers on numerous key server benchmarks, including SPECint_rate2006, SPECfp_rate2006, and TPC-C Value (Price/tpmC). Learn more about server benchmarks here.
o Two-processor servers using these latest AMD Opteron processors outperform Intel Xeon 5680 (“Westmere”) processor-based servers on eight key server benchmarks.
    o SPECint_rate2006
    o SPECint_rate_base2006
    o SPECfp_rate2006
    o SPECfp_rate_base20061
    o SPECjbb 2005
    o TPC-C Value (Price/TpmC)
    o TPC-H Value (Price/QphH)
    o SPECpower_ssj2008 power consumption
  • The AMD Opteron 6000 Series platform’s core scalability and efficient architecture helped enable the new Dell PowerEdge C6145 server to set a new performance record for 2U servers. The Dell PowerEdge C6145 has more than doubled the previous record for SPECfp_rate2006 performance in a 2U server.
Recent accolades for AMD’s server CPUs include third-party organizations naming the AMD Opteron 6100 Series processor “Best CPU” of 2011 for parallel processing, calling out the AMD Opteron powered Dell PowerEdge R815 as 2010 Server of the Year and awarding it a Silver Award for Server Hardware.

Nice way of saying Intel's 2P server kicked the bejeebus out of our 4P servers under most scenarios, so we had to adjust prices accordingly

Don't get me wrong AMD's server CPUs are great and very affordable compared to Intel but they really need something fresh like Bulldozer if they want to increase their market share.

That means 240w for 4ghz I imagine

Not these are meant for overclocking, but still.

If there is 12 cores with 65W TDP on 45nm, what will be on 32nm??? It is amazing what AMD engineers do with what they have. It is much easier to Intel engineers, they have newer technology and much, much more resources....

whant to see benchmarks first before iám going to believe that stament xd

12 cores are nice in programs that support multicore
but what about single core apps

AMD FTW!!! I prefer AMD, but I will buy an Intel. I think AMD is better bang for buck. I'm hoping that the new Bulldozer smashes intel.

I'm in the process of building a server for work with four 6100 Opterons inside
(only the 8 core versions though)

Supermicro board, four 6100 opterons and will have 512GB ram!!! (currently only 192GB is installed)

Very scary build when it turned on for the first time hehe

Yes it seems they're always try to do more with less, which is an admirable quality. The 6100s are pretty cool too because you get quad-channel memory access per core, meaning that for every 2 cores you get one memory dimm.

AMD, can you please stop beating the dead horse that is K10.5, and get around to releasing Bulldozer?

*checks TDP values*
Hmm, those values don't seem like the TDP values at all, they seem more like the ACP (Average CPU Power) values.
Based on the previous 8-core/12-core Magny-Cours Opteron, I'm guessing that the TDP values are:
6132HE - 85W
6140 - 115W
6166HE - 85W
6176 - 115W
6180SE - 140W

Is this really TDP, or is it ACP? They were making a big stink a while back about how TDP is measured, since apparently they and Intel do it differently... I thought that AMD decided to measure TDP differently because they felt Intel was underrating their products.

These should be ACP values TDP values are close to pointless for servers which are on 24/7 and experience uniform workload.

They are two six-core dies on a single package. The two dies can sort of communicate together through an internal HT link.

so these are just new version of old chips right?? magny cours has been out since march of 2010

also AMD did away with 4P costs by making 2 different server sockets

C32 is for single and dual optys

G34 is for the rest

thanks AMD
