Cannot install 4850 drivers;PC hangs/restarts.

Hi.

Windows 7
Originally had Win 7 on my system. PC restarted automatically at a certain point at boot time(a little after the Windows logo at boot). Safe mode worked FINE. I decided to reinstall but could not install afresh as the restart problem (which was still present) did not allow Win 7 setup to complete.

Windows Vista

Windows Vista Setp completed properly. When I tried to install the ATI drivers(I tried 2 versions: 10.12 and 11.2; both with catalyst and only driver), the PC would not boot but hang at a point of time similar to where Win 7 would restart. Again, Safe mode works FINE.

How is it that the safe mode works fine(with Windows VGA drivers) and when I try to install the ATI drivers, does it fail to boot?

PC specs:
CPU Intel 8400 3Ghz
Palit 4850 512MB RAM
RAM 2GB Corsair
MSI Platinum P45 Platinum
PSU Corsair 450W

Thank you.

Try turning off/on a setting called "Plug and Play OS" in your BIOS. It might not help, but just an idea.

I tried to install Vista afresh as I have mentioned in my original query but the problem is basically the same.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. I tried the card on another slot too(I don't have access to another PC) but the problem remains.

Can you tell me how much warranty does Palit offer? I got this card a little more than 2 years ago.

Also, can some one check and tell me if these PSU output values that I got from the bios are right(just to rule the possibility that the PSU is not able to pump out enough power now):
CPU Vcore: 1.176V
3.3V: 3.232
5V: 5.045
12V: 12.232

Thank you for all your replies. I appreciate you guys trying to help me. Thank you.

What BIOS is your board running? 1.1?
Users at the MSI forums have had the same problems, and they have been apparently solved by flashing to 1.2.
You can find the 1.6 BIOS here

Thanks for the quick reply and for putting effort to look for solutions.
I update regularly and I have the 1.6 bios for quite some time now.

Try going into "Advanced BIOS Features" in your BIOS, and enabling/disabling a setting called "IOAPIC".

the IRQ's are conflicting with something else, which isnt normal.

is there a setting in your BIOS to do that automatically or manually? might be worth toggling it around.

There's more like that, just going through them one at a time.

I changed the IOAPIC function to disabled(it was enabled by default) but then, the PC refused to start. It just kept on reseting(see below) after 4-5 seconds for ever before I had to clear the CMOS.

Let me also add that there was a problem earlier when my PC used to reset after 4-5 seconds(Unrelated to my earlier restart problem). Fidgeting with the CPU components usually solved that problem.

I am mentioning this now is because, after the apparent Video card failur, this problem has aggravated. I cannot start(and even restart) my PC without the PC resetting itself 7-8 times at one go. Also, after some resets, I get(usually, not always) a message that the overclocking faild and that the bios has been restored to defaults(despite having done no overclocking at all.)

I cannot find the exact cause of these problems. Is it the Video card of is it the board?
