Dell Intros AMD Brazos Platform-based Inspiron Notebooks

Dell introduced its very first Inspiron notebook based on the AMD Fusion platform, the Inspiron M102z. The 11.6-inch notebook is available in two variants based on the processor model, one with dual-core AMD C-50 1.00 GHz at US $699, and the other with dual-core AMD E-350 1.60 GHz at $799. The $699 variant features Radeon HD 6250 graphics, 2 GB of memory, 320 GB 7.2k RPM HDD, 56 Whr 6-cell battery, and connectivity that includes WiFi b/g/n, and Bluetooth 3.0.

The $799 variant packs Radeon HD 6310 graphics, 4 GB memory, and 500 GB 7.2k RPM HDD apart from other features of the $699 variant. Both models feature 1366x768 pixel WLED-backlit display, 1.3 MP webcam, 7-in-1 card reader, and 3W stereo speakers with SRS surround technology.

yeah, good luck with trying to sell netbook hardware with a laptop price.
Brazos is cool, but this isn't what it was made for.

they really need to take advantage of the low power consumption and relatively low cost of the chips to build their mobile devices. but this just isn't it.

Are you kidding me!!!

If this is the route AMD is going with this then there going to be digging themselves a very deep hole.

For $799 you can get much hardware.

It's an Inspiron (IE, home line). Precision and Latitude are the business class models.

Its priced high because its new.

Soon as the other manufacturers start selling Brazos chips the prices will come down.

Wait a month or two before you buy.

Then Dell clearly shows their notorious AMD support.

i know a guy who used to work at dell stores, before they were closed. he said they were told to lie about amd's performance to customers. they were selling amd's as the slowest machines available.

700 bucks for a netbook lol. Makes me wonder what were they smoking. I've seen C-50 based Acer's for like 350 EUR...

Maybe they're going the same route as lenovo's x120e and will price them that high but run a continuous 40% off sale....

We can only hope. Meanwhile the only brazos netbooks with the proper price are from acer, and there's not many options. I know that manufacturer's didn't have the relations with AMD for notebooks and netbooks in a lot of cases... but they should have been able to see the promise of this platform in advance. I'm disappointed in how few brazos choices there are now that we're months after launch.

Nothing wrong with liking Dell, they are not half bad when making laptops. Somehow I think Dell has received kickbacks from Intel, otherwise they will not sell a netbook at notebook prices.

That is pretty much a given.
After what Intel paid for what they have done.

"AMD E-350 1.60 GHz at $799"

wow and any other PC maker (toshiba etc.) it's about $400.

I guess Dell is still getting those Intel kickbacks, or AMD has to pay Dell to use their products.

Note to self *Never Ever Buy A Dell*

So Mr. Dell, whats the deal? Just being a crook?

The current HP closest equivalant to the $800 model is only $550.

Sony's identical model to the $800 unit is only $600. And that is Sony, the company pretty much known for overpricing their laptops almost as badly as Apple...

I'm not quite sure what Dell was smokin' when they came up with these prices.

It is weird, they are usually good pricewise. Unless these things have some features not mentioned in the notes. Like ... I don't know, a touchscreen, 20 hour full power battery life and an SSD or something.

Well the standard battery on the Dells last for 9 hours, but they offer an upgrade battery that lasts for 14.

Also, I read on Engaget that there should be a model that has a TV tuner built in for another $60. Still overpriced, though.
