Black & White (game): Graphics Problem

Hey all,

I recently had this urge to play Black & White. So, I dig my CD out, reinstall, applied patch 1.3 (later uninstalled and tried patch 1.1), tried compatibility for XP sp3, 2000, and 98, and every time I get the same problem. Intro videos play just fine, and once I have control of the screen, its OK at best, still not very good. But the worst is when the conscience is talking, or the introduction of the family and the kid playing in the water - where the game is actually creating the graphics, but you're not in control of it. FPS is around 1/2.

Hardware:
HP EliteBook 8530w (laptop)
CPU: T9600 2.8GHz dual
Memory: 2x2 DDR2 800
Video: NVIDIA Quardo 770m w/ 512MB

Anyone have ideas?

Thanks,
David

Have you tried it on your desktop?
The bad performance might be due to your GPU drivers being too new.

No I haven't - I just edited my profile to show that I don't have that desktop anymore. The HP laptop is my only machine.

-edit-
btw, that is a RIDICULOUS download speed for you home connection... T1? and what are you doing that you need such an internet connection? it can't *possibly* be cheap.

Have you tried XP mode? Also try the release drivers for your GPU.

PS. It's an ordinary broadband connection.

XP Mode is a pile of shit. It only has 2D accelleration, so it won't be able to run any 3D games.

that part is rather obvious... it was Microsoft. But, thanks for the tip on 2D only.

While Googling to confirm the lack of 3D acceleration, Tomshardware.com suggested using VirtualBox... I'm going to do that since I have access to MSDNAA and I'll just download a copy of Windows XP.

you're kidding right? this video card plays oblivion just fine. its quite capable of playing Black & White. I'm far more likely to believe that its too new than not capable.

You may want to try looking for modded drivers so you can spoof it into thinking it's a normal GeForce card. It's based on the 9600M GT.
