GTX 285 no longer works.

I'll try to keep this simple.

I bought a GTX 285 with bad fan. Card was booting up fine, but the fan would not spin. Decided to switch to an aftermarket cooler. I installed the cooler yesterday, put the card in my computer. Fans still don't spin and now the card won't boot up at all!

New cooler to tight maybe? I've had this happen on a 9500GT in a rig I helped a friend upgrade.

Did you plug in the fan cables properly?

Possible the mobo could be bad, if neither fans spin then I'd vote a mobo problem. Even if the card itself doesnt work, fans plugged in correctly run separate.

I don't know, but there may be bulged/leaking/burst capacitors on the GTX 285. If this is the case, you may have to re-cap/replace the capacitors yourself or let someone do it for you.

On the other hand, this kinda sounds like solder issues underneath the GPU. And during the replacement of the GPU cooler the solder issues may have worsened. I guess if the GTX 285 is really not working anymore, then the last resort would be re-flowing the solder under neath the GPU by either the "oven-trick" or using a heat-gun to re-flow the solder, just like what people did for the PS3 yellow light problems or Xbox 360's red ring of death problems.

I read a very similar post recently that mentioned something shorting out. If the cooler is ill fitting and/or there is something causes a short circuit. I'd remove the custom fan and double check for anything that looks out of place.

Also, just in case, you have plugged the fan in haven't you? First rule of IT.

Thanks for all the help guys!

@Chevalr1c
Fan is plugged in.

@ShiBDiB
My GTX 260 works fine so this eliminates the possibility of the mobo being bad.

@TC I'm gonna re-install the OEM cooler and see what happens. If it doesn't work I'll use a heat gun to reflow.

The fans should spin with just the fan and not the card plugged in and the system booted.
