I also expected all PCIe connectors to have eight pins. On a model like the ZM850-HP a mix of 6 and 8 pin connectors could be acceptable due to the lower wattage, but not for a 1000 W model like this.

Why? The only cards I know that have only eight pin connectors are the HD 6990 and GTX 590. This would lead to a problem with this PSU power 2 of those titans at once, but the spectrum of people with 2 of these is a very, very, very, small market.

While I can't say this unit is not directly targeted at that market, I can see people run just one of those cards, or 2 or 3 lesser cards buy a 1000 watt unit. I will even venture to say the latter is far more likely being a much broader market.

6990 peaks (max is lower) at 301W and 590 at 356W according to TPU reviews, so with two VGA configuration power consumtion (on the VGAs) would be 602W and 712W. I think there is plenty of room till 1000W that this PSU outputs.

In the past I have tested 6pin and 6+2pin PCIe connectors and got the same results on all of them, meaning that 6pin could draw as much power as 6+2 without any extra voltage drops. You see the two extra pins are just grounds. However some cards in order to unlock overclocking features (at least in an ancient 3870X2 I had this was the case) 6+2pin connectors were essential.

Ok. Makes sense. I agree. There seems to be no valid argument to not include those extra 2 wires on the 6-pin to make them 6+2 pin connectors. Especially at a $250 price point.

they just wanted to cut cost down and did not bother to use different cabling set up on the two PSUs.
