Booting from onboard usb 3.0?

I have a gigabyte 890fxa-ud5 and I was thinking about getting a usb 3.0 flash drive for it. So just to mess with things, I was trying to boot my windows install usb drive from it and bios wont recognize it. Is it not possible to boot from the onboard usb 3.0 on these 890 boards? Or is it just a gigabyte thing?

The problem is, USB 3.0 ports on nearly all motherboards are provided by NEC Controller Chip.

In order to boot from USB 3.0, BIOS have to have the apropriate driver for it. Or another option is, USB 3.0 controller have to be inside the north or south bridge.

So, it is not a Gigabyte thing. ATM, nearly all mobos are not able to boot from USB 3.0. When AMD and Intel integrates USB 3.0 to their chipsets, we will be able to boot from it.

It works for me on my Crosshair IV and Gigabyte 890GX. You just need to make sure that the USB drive is bootable, then select it as your boot drive in the HDD boot order in your bios.

usb 3.0? the drive boots off every other slot in the rig except the usb 3.0 slots. the usb 3.0 slots are not detected in the bios for the hdd boot order. no matter what i put in them.

I'm quite sure as the last time I installed windows I was using my USB 3.0 flash drive on a USB 3.0 port.

Actually that was on my Crosshair IV. It uses the Renasas USB 3.0 chip. I can test it out with the gigabyte tonight.

You need a motherboard with native support in the chipset for booting to "USB 3.0"

You will have to wait 'til Hudson - D3(desktop) or M3(mobile) MBs come out with the native support or wait for Intel to add it... depending on your preference.

AMD First to Natively Support USB 3.0

As, of, right now, I do not know of any add-in cards for USB 3.0 that have the on-board bios boot ROM for that option, either.

Edit: This Z68 MB from ASRock may (personally, have no first hand knowledge of this board) support booting to USB 3.0, as the manual is showing support for enabling legacy devices and USB 3.0 support in the UEFI setup.

Spoiler
