Llano desktop preview

for those of you that have not seen it, anantech did a preview of the Llano desktop ...APU

http://www.anandtech.com/show/4448/a...rmance-preview

the gist of the CPU performance was

"As we found in our look at mobile Llano, the A8 isn't impressive as a general purpose x86 microprocessor. In general the chip is somewhat faster than the Athlon II X4 635 and I'd say it performs more like a 645 based on the numbers I've seen here."

granted it's a preview but anandtech is solid. Those this preview make anyone nervous that the bulldozer APU may just be Phenom II with integrated graphics?

How could Bulldozer be a Phenom II with integrated graphics when it is a completely new architecture that doesn't have integrated graphics?

I think what he meant was the "bulldozer APU" not bulldozer itself. I read somewhere they were planning on releasing a high end APU based on BD called Trinity.

Ok, but that still won't be a Phenom II.

The Llano has Phenom II cores, however it has no L3 cache, instead each core has 1MB of L2 cache,so it's more like a Athlon II.
Too bad AMD couldn't fit L3 cache in,but I don't think it would really matter.

I've heard that Phenom II is about 20% faster than Athlon II, clock for clock. I expect this is because of the L3 cache, but for the applications of the Llano, it shouldn't hurt too bad.

Looks like a nice chip. Not that I'd ever consider one, but it's still nice

It's Athlon cores but it definitely isn't Phenom II or Athlon II think of the Stars Athlon III

IPC should be the same but it isn't (Athlon II = Phenom II architecturally no difference except for L3)

As you can tell

45nm Immersion Lithography 635 2.9GHz No TC
32nm High-K Metal Gate A8-3850 2.9GHz No TC

Phenom II = 4x 512 KB L2

Athlon II = 4x 512 KB L2

Stars Athlon A8 = 4x 1MB L2
Quote:
Propus is a native quad-core die design with no disabled cores, based on Deneb without L3 cache. Some processors that report themselves as Propus are actually Deneb cores with disabled L3 cache. No official reason has been given for the mixing, although speculated to be for market demand or defective L3 cache. Deneb Athlons have a code of CACYC.
Regor Athlon IIs are what the Llano A8s are based on if they are going to be based on anything

Quote:
Most Regor-based processors feature double the L2 cache per core (1 MB) as other Athlon II and Phenom II processors.

I have no problem with that, as far as the APU goes. I currently have an Athlon II X4 and it does everything well. In fact the model with the 400 VLIW5 gpu will probably out perform my whole setup. Would be fine for me in a laptop

@dirtyferret... I had a ferret a few years ago... we named him dusty. funny critters

If this is to believed, prices look good
The flagship, A8-3850, a 2.9GHz quad core should go for $150, and that's $20 cheaper than what we saw some time ago:
