DDR4 Questions
It seems DDR4 is going to hit midway into 2011s life span. Am I right in thinking because the memory controller is on the processor we'll need new boards and new cpus to use DDR4? If so that sucks balls. I was hoping 2011 would be as future proof as 1366 was. Considering there's no 8 core 2011 chip at launch I might just ignore the whole socket until they have DDR4 8 core chips in the $300 range.
Side note, why can't I caps the title? |

You're going to be waiting for quite a while if you want an 8 core intel chip for $300. That's just my guess though. Don't quote me on that.

Well basically I'm expecting at some point 2011 will just be 8 core procs. So one will have to be at the $300 mark. Before then there will be a 6 core in that slot.

You do realize that's the price of the entry 1366 procs? The platform it's replacing.

nm the OP is just worded horribly.
however, the link about DDR3 is on topic. take some time and read it. it shows that DDR4 won't come into play until 2015 really... |

Yeah, so horribly worded only one person didn't get it... blame Intel for the name. Anywho, those projections are irrelevant. DDR4 launches in 2012 and that just so happens to be when 2011 will be launching. Now usually board makers would start rolling out new DDR4 boards for enthusiasts like us right off the bat but with integrated memory controllers, and back to my still unanswered main point, won't this switch require new cpus as well? Essentially making 2011 in need of a revision right out of the gate? That's going to really tank resale value on early adopters.

I guess it depends on whether Intel designed Socket-2011 to be a long-term socket like 775, or single-generation like 1366/1156. Perhaps if the built-in memory controller on the processor is compatible with DDR4, but they might release updated processors that can handle it.

I think that's impossible to happen now.

correct. onboard memory controllers and PCI-E lanes mean that they cant just keep upgrading, at some point they have to break out into a new, incompatible design or else the backwards and forwards compatibility cripples their choices.
like having an x58 board designed for 1333Mhz DDR3 ram - they cant just release a new CPU that does 2000Mhz DDR3 for that socket, since none of the boards are tested for it. they cant add more PCI-E lanes to a mobo without every CPU supporting it, because otherwise people would have boards where certain slots dont function without the right CPU, and so on. TL;DR: the more they integrate, the more they change sockets.

ddr4 is supposedly being released in late 2013 so 2011 should be about as long lived as 1366. the expectation that ddr4 will hold a majority by end of 2014 is unlikely but might happen under certain conditions. i don't think op has much to worry about.
*ddr4 is suposedly delayed from 2012. http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/memory/...p_Rapidly.html |

That's another thing I've wondered. Why is the next DDR not matching GDDR5 tech? In the past DDR and GDDR have been pretty equally paced for speed. By the time DDR4 hits 3200 Mhz effective GDDR5 should be at 6000mhz or more on the highend. Is there some difficulty in implementing the quad pumped memory on a desktop architecture?

I don't get why you'd find that impractical. $300 is the entry price for the highend intel platforms. Every time they intro a new model the previous ones gets bumped down. At the least a 6 core will make it to the $300 mark.

The main reason why they probably won't be in the sub $300 or $300 range is because AMD will not be able to compete with Intel's socket 2011 SB procs. I will be surprised if it beats out their current 1155 lineup, but the tables will turn in a few months after Bulldozer actually hits the market.
But on topic, DDR4 from what I remember was supposed to get up on its feet starting late 2013 and mass production in 2014. So I think those who are worrying about whether or not to get a new DDR3 or upgrade their current DDR3 rig needs to just do it!

because they dont just add more cores into the lineup each time, most generational boosts on intels side are a faster architecture with the same amount of cores.

True for prior platforms, but I thought the general idea is that 22nm was going to be all about the core density going up. Aren't there 8 cores in the 2011 roadmap?
