Email clients not remembering passwords

Hi all

A friends computer will not remember his gmail password. He used to use outlook, and seeing that I use thunderbird and it would be easier to troubleshoot I installed that for him. Now that was working for a few weeks, and now the same problem is occuring.

We are 100% sure the password is correct, as we can access the email account through webmail, but the local clients will not remember the correct password. Of course the 'Remember password' button is checked, but still no good.

It returns with incorrect password.

Any suggestions?

try a reinstall of thunderbird, backup the settings to make it easy.
it may just be some cache/config error.

past that, i would use imap instead of pop3, or vice versa. you can
change the settings in gmail to allow them, then set up the account
in thunderbird again to get it to recognize the other protocol.

if he is always online imap is better, if connection is spotty pop3 is.

Just an idea... if, he/she has any software apps (CCleaner, Comodo System Cleaner, Advanced System Care, or other utilities of this type) that do cleaning (auto or manual) make sure that they are not set to clear passwords, also, make sure the mail app is not set to clear passwords on exit.

None of these worked. I just dont get it. We can log in to the email account from the web page, but not through any client.
I cant log into it on this machine through a client either so its not localised to that machine.

Anything else that it could be?

have to assume it's a configuration error.

go to tools->account settings, expand the account in question
then list out all of the settings you have for the first half of that page

I have tried both kind.
I have used the auto config that gmail sends thunderbird, I have made sure they are exactly the same as my gmail settings, and I have un installed, and re installed the program.
His gmail settings on the webpage are allowing the program to recieve email, and remember, it used to recieve email fine.

find the config file, hope its text, then put the password in and save. your mileage may vary though.

Maybe, but it could be storing data elsewhere and it might be difficult to get a clean enough removal to ensure that the settings file doesn't stay retained and effect further installs.

Ill give it a go anyway. I might just store the data in a different folder to be safe, and then if it still fails, I can import the mail back in
