8800GT Baked to perfection!
A while back I posted a thread about some loots I got from my friend who pulled it from the trash...
http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=139530 well one of the items was an 8800GT 512mb card. The thing was non-functional in every system we tested it in. I decided to hold on to it for the cooler just in case. well I heard about the "oven" trick and started thinking about it. I waited a LONG time before trying b/c i really wasn't sure about it. well today I finally got fed up with the Radeon HD3000 igp. its great for most tasks, but not for much gaming. well, I stuck that 8800GT in the oven! I baked it at 400F for 10min.... and... IT FRACKING WORKED! I haven't even installed drivers yet (hence the missing info) but i'm on my way to download them now!

Keep us informed on how the card runs once the drivers are installed.

Awesome! I hope it works for you, but remember that baking is usually only a short term fix. The issue will likely re-appear eventually.

Baking works very well. also you can use a very high heat gun and it does the same trick!

Use afterburner to control the fan speed instead of nVidia system tools. That way you don't have to run the fan at 100% all the time. That thing has to be loud as hell at 8500 RPM...

it has a bit of a whine, but not as bad is the window a/c unit behind me lol
I plan to get an aftermarket cooler for the video card and my cpu later... i'm thinking of using the cooler from my 9600gt, but it doesn't cool the voltage reg. for the 8800gt. about to run the crysis gpu benchmark. had to patch it to fix the DX10 bug crash. which happened during the test. Edit: ok i ran the benchmark... got an avg 25fps at very high spec at 1280x960. I think the vram amount might have limited it a bit. My cpu got a little too hot tho lol. Waiting for it to cool and ill run another bench. Posting from my phone atm. Its real sensitive to heat since the psu burned out back in jan.

haven't had a chance to run any benchies... been pretty hot lately even at night with 2 window a/c units running. seems the second my athlon x4 reaches the 120-125F mark the comp freezes. I know its not the gpu b/c i've been having this issue even when using the igp. as soon as i get a spare $30 for a better cooler i'll run some more benchmarks. I did manage to get about 40fps in crysis at 1024x768 on "very high" spec. Starcraft II seems to run very well on "extreme" setting. tho the texture setting has been set to high instead of very high due to only having 512mb vram. Half life 2 ran at 60fps at 1280x960 with max AA/AF settings, and with EP2 effects added to it.
