Need help with using HDTV as monitor @1080p/60hz

At the moment, I'm using my HDTV (Sony KDL40-BX420) as a secondary monitor for my pc. I'm sure that the tv supports 1080p/60hz (checked the specs of the tv), but the tv won't accept anything above 720p at 60hz :banghead:

. I think it's the cable (hdmi), but I have no other experience on using a HDTV as a monitor. Highest supported resolutions (which work) at the moment are 1080i/30hz or 1080p/24hz. Any help is appreciated

that's common with non 1080P TV, you'll find your actual resolution is 1366x768 and it is just scaling it, your best odds are to get a VGA cable so you can display the native res

EDIT: Ignore that, it is infact 1080P, looks to be a small fault in your graphics drivers detecting it, try forcing the card to 60hz

I'm getting choices as low as 480p (720x480) and as high as 1080p (1920x1080). Manual says the tv supports it, and Nvidia Control panel says that 1080p/60hz is the native for the tv. I can do stuff even though its only running at 1080p/24hz but I think the tv can (should) do better.

What happens if you don't go through the NVIDIA control panel and instead go thorugh Windows screen resolution/display properties? If you set it to 1920x1080 in the Windows settings, it is going to assume 60 Hz although you can change it through advanced settings.

it could just be a fault in the TV, if it's the TV displaying 1080P at 30HZ, but you know the card is outputting it at 60HZ, then it's likely just be reported wrong, in which case just ignore it

Tried to force 60hz card output to tv. 60hz is no good. Same with 59hz. I can use higher hz with 720p and below. Strange.

What happens at 60 Hz? Does the screen give a message (Frequency Out of Range or something like that)?

I'm going to guess that the firmware in the TV is incapable of processing a 1920x1080 @ 60 Hz signal. Is this TV pretty old? The ATSC standard (which the Philippines uses) didn't support 1080p at greater than 30 fps until July 2008 (and even then, support is not guarenteed).

Computers can't do interlaced (unless NVIDIA has that specific option somewhere in the control panel) so 720p is your best (if not only) option.

The tv came from the US. And the tv is just a few weeks old. 60hz gives me a "Unsupported Signal. Please check the device output" error.

do you have a Xbox/PS3/blu-ray player you can plug in, just to check it will actually support 1080P of whether it's just some sort of incompatibility or incorrect setting with the PC

Hi,

I guess this is some kind of a limitation of the Sony KDL40-BX420. Then the only way to get 1080p with this Sony LCD TV as a PC monitor is to use a HD-15 pin cable, i.e. vga d-sub monitor cable.

From the manual for this model:

"The 1080p timing when applied to the HDMI input will be treated as a video timing and not PC timing."

I suspect this is where the problem lies. Your video card driver sounds like it is confused about whether it is connected to a TV or to a monitor.

Ruh, roh. That is likely your problem then. You're getting too much single loss between source and destination. I think they make HDMI boosters/repeaters. If it is a really long cable run, you might want to consider throwing a booster in half way. Otherwise, you might have to buy a high-quality, low loss HDMI cable.

If you want to rule out the cable as the cause, you can try moving them closer (<10 feet) and using a 10' or less cable to connect them. If the monitor accepts 1080p60 without problems under that scenario, you found your culprit.

It's 5m (around 16ft). Well, The first option (lower length) is out since I need the tv a little farther, and getting another cable of the same length isn't easy (not so many choices available here). The HDMI repeater/booster, I have no idea where to get one (except maybe online). I will try these things in order (now) though, and see what works:
1. reinstall drivers (per Bumblebee's suggestion)
2. look around more forums (though I've had little success with that, too)
and, 3. swap cable sometime this week

if you can display 1080p/24 without artifacts I don't think the HDMI cable is the problem. your television has 2 HDMI ports have you tried connecting the HDMI cable to the other port?

tried all the HDMI ports? my TV is a 1366x768, yet only one of its three HDMI ports supports that (as opposed to 720p/1080i, which are blurrier)
