Prolimatech Megahalems and its variations works well for (stock speed) i7. My CPU doesn't exceed 55 c° on full load with ambient room temperature around 27 c°.
There are other great alternatives that I won't go into detail due to missing experience.

Coolermaster Hyper 212 is a more than adequate cooling for 4.5ghz but probably be pushing it for 4.8ghz, either way if your budget is tight its definitely one to look at otherwise the D14 is very good for extreme overclocking on air.

Thermalright HR-02 Macho is the bang-for-buck cooler, so long as it fits your case.

my recommendation is TR Archon, if it fits. It is dead silent (if it is not, everything else isn't either) and gives exceptional cooling performance. (not as much as a NH-D14, but that is kinda crazy ass big!)

get the crosair h100 self containted liquid cooling system. my overclocked core i7 2600k never gets over 58 degrees on load(while playing bc2). most games play at 54c. cpu idles around 31c, never been more pleased with a liquid cooling system.

issue would be, they are louder than the high performance air coolers.

The Macho is just 0.4C behind the Archon in load temps, yet is WAY cheaper. As in, less than half the Archon's price cheaper.

i7 920 at 4.209GHz 100% load temps are 80°C at peak in this hot summer weather. The 2600k should run a lot cooler. |

I am using the NH-D14 on my 2600K. Overclocked to 4.7ghz @ 1.4v full load it gets to 75°C on the hottest core, ambient 23°C, and i have a hot chip.

Does anybody know of a preferred mounting direction for HSF on the Sandy bridges i2500k/2600k?? I have my Frio mounted horizontally, blowing air out towards the back exhaust fan.
My temps seem kinda high (hottest core 62c @stock clocks and auto 1.232v), and didn't know if its worth trying to rotate the setup to blow up and out the top vents. |

intel say 98C ..
but the cpu goes up to 70C almost instantly on WC loop.. "30 ambiant" compared to q9400 that climbed slowly to his 55C.. and stayed there
