Myspace and social networking sites to become inaccessible for minors.

In a 410-15 vote, the USA Senate revised the DOPA, a bill originally passed May 9th to prevent minors from accessing social networking sites such as Myspace. DOPA is well intended, as its purpose is to prevent children from being sexually solicited. However, all sites that host profiles and allow for communication between users could be banned by the new legislation. DOPA is very broad, and will probably ban innocent sites such as Slashdot, Amazon, and Redstate. Opponents of the bill, such as Michigan Democrat John Dingell say "So now we are on the floor with a piece of legislation poorly thought out, with an abundance of surprises, which carries with it that curious smell of partisanship and panic, but which is not going to address the problems. This is a piece of legislation which is going to be notorious for its ineffectiveness and, of course, for its political benefits to some of the members hereabout." The new legislation passes some basic guidelines, and leaves the rest in the hands of the FCC.

In determining the definition of a social networking Web site, the Commission shall take into consideration the extent to which a Web site...

• Is offered by a commercial entity.
• Permits registered users to create an online profile that includes detailed personal information.
• Permits registered users to create an online journal and share such a journal with other users.
• Elicits highly personalized information from user.
• Enables communication among users.

Myspace, bebo and other websites alike... I hate them. And i'm forever getting email telling me to 'join the network because someone i know wants to talk to me!!!'

Websites like that should never have been created in the first place and it amazes me how popular they somehow became.

Both versions apply only to schools and libraries that accept federal funding,

maybe i don't care all that much and therefore the only real step i've taken towards this goal is to post on here saying that high schoolers are off facebook

maybe you shouldn't get your panties in a bunch just because somebody is sick of hearing ignorant comments on facebook about gays being sinners, blacks being unevolved, and touching yourself causes blindness
