Help saved over my file and I didn't want to!
Im running MS office 2003 and i accidentally saved over my fuel mpg chart, and here is the catch i completely erased all the4 current data and put in data from another vehicle, and hit save by accident.
What can i do? I crashed MS Excel but it gave me the current one that i saved by accident.

System restore?
Or can Excel restore a previous version, I'm not sure... Edit: Microsoft really should work towards avoiding things like that... they should make some sort of security mechanism... maybe some additional confirmation prompt... displaed by some sort of mascot... since its MS Office, a paperclip would be genious! And it could help with lots of other things, and you don't even have to ask him, he just shows up, how convenient! Yeah they really should do something like that.

Pull the old version off your backup? You do have a backup, don't you?

I think MSO has versioning informatiion for the files, but I am not sure if you have to explicity turn it on or not (I don't use MSO).
Pepsi, write yourself a little script using Robocopy to at least backup files to another directory. I'm not giving you crap, it's just that so many people don't regularly backup important data it's not funny. As a network admin it's up-front and center for me on a daily basis.

Try this:
1 Click "Start" and then "Search." 2 Select "All Files and Folders" when asked what you want to search for. 3 Type in "*.xls" (without the quotation marks) under "All or Part of the File Name." 4 Click on the arrow next to "More advanced options" and make sure that the file type reads "All Files and Folders." 5 Click the boxes next to "Search System Folders" and "Search Hidden Files." 6 Click "Search." 7 Look for an earlier version of your file (it should have a similar name). When it appears, open it to see if it is the version you want. ___________________ I don't know if it works, I found the instructions off google.. |

Did you right click on the file, hit properties, then try the previous versions tab?

Sorry for the loss pepsi71ocean ... if there's a bright side to this it's that learning the hard way is often the most effective way. Regular backups are important. This is why I recommend using both RAID [1, 5, or other redundant type] (to secure data against hardware failure) and also backing up your most important data regularly to another [preferably also RAID 1, 5, etc.] installation in a separate geographic location. It's the kind of practice that seems like overkill until you need it.

Very unfortunate. If it was 2010 there is a function to return any unsaved/rewritten document.
